The Project

The CPB Contractors, Ghella & UGL joint venture has been successful in securing the contract to deliver the $3.1bn M6 Stage 1 project. The project will deliver the missing link from Sydney’s south to the wider Sydney motorway network making journeys easier, faster and safer. It will remove more than 2,000 trucks a day from surface roads and help return local streets to local communities.

With works commenced in early 2022, the M6 Stage 1 project scope includes the construction of twin four-kilometre tunnels and associated works, linking the M8 Motorway at Arncliffe to President Avenue at Kogarah.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Mechanical & Electrical Commercial Manager, this is a critical and challenging role in a strong and supportive team.

Key responsibilities of this role include;

Managing Subcontractors and Suppliers through to completion including assessment and negotiation of delay claims, requests for variation and extension of time and notices of dispute. Assessing and approving Subcontract variations including identification for entitlement under the Head Contract. Ensuring compliance with Security of Payment Act in undertaking Subcontractor payment claim assessment and processing. Promptly attend to and manage claims/disputes and referral to Project Manager and Commercial Manager, Business Unit Commercial Manager, or Legal Counsel, as appropriate. Assist the Commercial Manager in compiling monthly client and internal reporting packs, particularly focusing on commercial, risk and finance aspects. Assist with and review Forecast Cost to Complete based on timelines, internal charge out rates, known and estimated costs and detailed assessment of Subcontractor status including approved, submitted and anticipated variations, together with any back charges applicable. Recognise risk and opportunities, generate reports and ensure that meaningful conclusions are available to key risk areas on project. Understanding of the basis of the tender, e.g. time, methodology, costing's, constraints. Understand the legislation/code and its application on the project to prevent potential business exposure. Ensure that insurances are in place, adequate and current for Subcontracts. Ensure compliance with project systems and processes (JDE, Rover, Felix, Management Plans etc). Promote project’s commercial capability by participating in the development and continual improvement of related behaviours and systems. Share knowledge and ideas to support continuous improvements within the team.

About You

The successful candidate will have;

Tertiary (Bachelor) degree in Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Business, Law, Quantity Surveying or associated disciplines. Minimum of 10 years of relevant commercial construction experience, 3-5 years' experience in similar role, M&E experience preferable. Demonstrable and successful experience in a commercial role on a project with value > $500m. Ability to proactively manage dispute process with clients, subcontractors and suppliers. Proven leadership skills; coaching and mentoring more junior members of the team. To be decisive on the negotiation of claims, displaying timely and quality decision making, as well as working effectively under tight deadlines and pressure. Demonstrated ability in liaising and building relationships with key stakeholders. Proven ability to interpret relevant legislation/code and its application on the project to prevent potential business exposure. Extensive Knowledge of project management structure, plans and implications for contract and commercial accountabilities. Extensive Knowledge of the tender (methodology, costings and constraints), contractual agreement, claim and dispute management. Advanced skills in procedures for project contract administration, general business administration and project management.

The successful candidate will be required to hold a current Construction Industry Induction Card (White Card or equivalent) and undergo a medical assessment (including drug and alcohol testing) prior to commencement.
