Why your role matters

In this pivotal role, you will lead staff and university-wide initiatives to create inclusive extracurricular programs that deliver a world-class student experience beyond the classroom. You will play a key role in designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based development and engagement opportunities, along with onboarding and transition support, to foster the holistic development of our students.

Collaborate with colleagues within the Student Life team, across the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Success portfolio, and with Faculties and Divisions. Reporting to the Head of Student Life, this role will oversee two direct reports.

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

Support and provide expert advice to the Head, Student Life to: develop and implement strategic and operational plans for student engagement and collaborate with relevant internal and external stakeholders, to enhance the UNSW student experience; anddevelop and manage budgets and resources ensuring efficiency and effectiveness within the University financial framework. Provide leadership and direction to direct reports in managing a team of frontline expert peer support and onboarding and transition support staff who provide a full suite of student programs and initiatives from acceptance through to graduation that inspire students to ‘participate’ and contribute to increasing their engagement with the institution. Design and implement outcome focused and cohort specific (UG, PG or underrepresented groups), orientation and transition to UNSW programs that focus on improving the first-year experience and subsequent retention and satisfaction rates of students.

About You:
You will hold a relevant tertiary qualification with substantial relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience. A thorough understanding of issues facing tertiary education students of a variety of equity backgrounds would be a distinct advantage alongside:

Demonstrated success in developing and implementing large-scale tertiary level student engagement and development activities focussed on creating a sense of belonging and contributing to the overall excellent student experience for students. Experience at a senior level in managing quality assurance and in developing, delivering and continually improving programs, processes and systems, including project management and change management processes. Demonstrated operational management skills and experience including strategic planning, budget management, planning, priority setting, and staff management, as well as excellent time management skills, with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative. Strong administration and project coordination skills with demonstrated success in improving processes/workflow, developing administrative systems and procedures. Proven ability and record of successfully: applying judgement, creativity, and flexibility to solve complex problems, including by generating new and innovative ideas and approaches; andgaining consensus and commitment from others and identifying and effectively diffuse potential areas of dispute and/or conflict. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a customer service focus and the demonstrated ability to build effective internal and external working relationships and influence, persuade, negotiate, and liaise at all levels across an organisation to achieve successful outcomes.
