About this role:

A Learning Support Teacher is specifically employed to work with students who need extra support or require an advanced program of education, in order to complete their learning successfully. A key aspect of working in special needs is identifying individual needs and being responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment.

Job tasks and responsibilities:

  • Work under the guidance of the Student Support Coordinator
  • Work closely as a member of the Student Support team
  • Work with the Student Support Coordinator to identify strategic learning and teaching priorities for students with additional needs (SWAN)
  • Identify, implement and evaluate a range of educational and management strategies and resources for classroom programs to meet the educational needs of children by consulting with the Student Support Coordinator
  • Assist the Student Support Coordinator to meet the learning support needs of SWANs requiring adjustments to their learning programmes.
  • Assist teachers in creating an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) for each student with additional needs, which outlines the goals that they will all work towards and associated activities
  • Understand a student’s identified learning difficulties and offer assistance within or outside classroom
  • Work with the student’s teacher by participating in activities, assisting, intervening and encouraging students and, where appropriate, provide one on one support

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

  • Tertiary degree in a teaching discipline
  • Current VIT registration
  • Ability to integrate IT into the curriculum and teaching practice.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students and colleagues
  • Able to manage pastoral issues relative to staff, students and parents through effective dialogue and process.
  • Well-developed report writing and oral communication skills.
  • Up to date knowledge of contemporary teaching application and theory
  • Commitment to child safety
  • Ability to: Create a happy, challenging and effective learning environment, establish a rapport with children, engaging them, keeping them focused and motivated and respond effectively to children and adapt teaching approach
