Melbourne, Australia Melbourne Water Full time

Who we are

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life.

As caretakers for Melbourne’s water cycle, we care for water, life and land throughout Melbourne: both its people and its biodiversity.

Each time you drink from the tap, flush a toilet, run through a backyard sprinkler, or kayak down the Yarra—we’re there. Primed and ready, quietly delivering some of the world’s cleanest water for over five million residents and wildlife that call Melbourne home —just as we have for over years.

If you value making it count, diving in with curiosity, and doing what’s right, you're in the right place.

About the Role

Reporting to Hammad Memon, DSS Inception & Review Area Manager, this is a pivotal role within the DSS Strategic Engineering & Planning team.

This is the time for Australia’s best Principal Engineers to join Melbourne Water. We are recruiting so YOU can make your mark and influence the whole of Melbourne Water catchment area. We have the mandate from the Victorian Planning Authority to prepare Melbourne’s drainage masterplan in the growth corridors of Melbourne’s greenfield areas. These include, and are not limited to, Croskell PSP (South East Region), Merrifield North PSP (North Region) and Melton East (West Region). YOU will prepare and shape Melbourne’s newest communities for the future and for generations to come.

This is a technical civil engineering role where substantial experience in stormwater asset design, project management, civil and land development engineering knowledge is needed to succeed. Your civil engineering expertise will be relied on as you undertake general technical investigations, provide clear advice, make informed engineering decisions and exercise sound engineering judgement.

This role will create, review and analyse flood models for the new communities. Our successful candidates will have substantial experience in stormwater design, with specialist knowledge of catchment modelling - which includes hydrological modelling, hydraulic design and stormwater quality modelling. Additionally, this role will manage specialist hydraulic, hydrologic, stormwater quality, and engineering design assessments, including investigations and functional designs conducted through Melbourne Water's Technical Panel.

Your experience in project planning means that you can expertly take projects through from planning to delivery. You can identity project risks and have the integrity to flag these that may impact on safety, quality, finance and timelines. You will keep the project/s ‘honest’ whilst keeping Melbourne Water true to its mandate to deliver for these new communities.

The role will require resilience, maintaining one’s focus and emotional intelligence We are in the planning and design stage and there is an abundance of complex data to analyse to ensure the new communities are flood resistant while also meeting appropriate social, environmental and cultural heritage standards.

We are working in a dynamic environment where designs and design ideas will be tested and challenged. Drainage design plans will undergo a reiterative process before being confirmed.

Therefore, you have the energy and mental agility to solve problems and be part of the ongoing conversations with stakeholders as we all journey towards building Melbourne’s new communities.

For more information, please see the attached Position Description:

About you:

YOU will lead and coordinate robust stakeholder engagement and communications, which includes communicating complex engineering matters to both technical and non-technical audiences. It goes without saying YOU have a reliable collection and ‘bank’ of experiences to draw from to ensure stakeholders are satisfied with the quantity and quality of information provided.

YOU have a solid reputation for and demonstrated background of respectfully and successfully partnering with key people on projects and communicating with a variety of stakeholders including consultants, local councils, government representatives, planning authorities, developers and community members.

YOU have solid stakeholder engagement and influencing skills and know how to apply these to form and maintain positive and professional working relationships with all stakeholders as you work towards delivery of objectives.

YOU have exceptional resilience and negotiation skills which will be utilised as you navigate complex issues, conversations, expectations and the general demands and priorities of the role. You have a work style that naturally lends itself to contributing to an inclusive workplace culture that is collaborative, professional and engaged.

If YOU want to contribute to an exciting agenda, are interested in a rewarding career where your work has an enduring impact on the community and being part of an organisation that supports the quality of life and making Melbourne one of the most enviable and liveable cities in the world to live in, we welcome your application

Our successful candidate will be a Registered Civil Engineer in Victoria, or eligible to become registered.

Why join us:

At Melbourne Water, we care about water and all life that springs from it.

Our people are fuelled by passion, and with safety at the forefront, we have an unwavering sense of purpose and are on a mission to protect every Melburnian’s way of life, one drop at a time.

We walk the talk when it comes to flexible working – but that’s not all. Our culture of purpose, safety, results, and learning permeates everything we do. We're dedicated to doing what's right, and this commitment extends to the meaningful work we do in a supportive and inclusive culture that encourages you to make the most of your talents.

Our long-standing commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging means that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQ+ individuals, people living with disability, mature age and young jobseekers from all cultures can apply with confidence knowing they are safe, affirmed, and celebrated.

If you’re curious, action-orientated, outcomes-focused, and care deeply for public resources, community, and the environment, we'd love to receive an application and learn if you could be a great fit.
