The Victorian Government is upgrading the Eastern Freeway with new express lanes, new traffic management technology and Melbourne’s first dedicated busway. These changes will slash travel times and improve public transport in Melbourne’s east.

Symal is part of the Eastern Freeway – Burke to Tram Alliance with Major Road Projects Victoria, Laing O’Rourke, Arcadis and WSP. Our scope of work includes a new interchange connecting the Eastern Freeway to the North East Link tunnels, major road and bridge upgrades between Burke Road and Tram Road, smart traffic management technology upgrades and new noise protection to meet Victoria’s toughest traffic noise standards. The local community will also benefit from new and upgraded walking and cycling connections, upgrades to Koonung Creek Reserve and revitalised wetlands and open spaces.


The role:

As our Alliance continues to grow, we are looking a Health, Safety & Wellbeing Coordinator to join the Health, Safety & Wellbeing team in a permanent role.

Reporting to the Senior HSW Advisor in one of our package delivery teams, you will contribute to the achievement of the Alliance’s Health & Safety objectives, support multiple safety programs and focusing on implementing and overseeing safety protocols within the package, to ensure compliance with OHS regulations.


Your every day:

  • ​​Collect, verify, collate and present statistics to identify trends in performance.   
  • ​​Provides basic HSE Management System (SMS) and contractual requirements coaching    
  • ​​Manage and maintain IMPACT data, including recording or HS&W data and reporting   
  • ​​Supporting and coordination of 5 Ways to Wellbeing Program across the program    
  • ​​Coordination of Program HS&W reporting including; compiling of data, interpretation of data and report writing etc.    
  • ​​Coordination of Program HS&W communications    
  • ​​Coordination of Leadership Engagement matrix including; development of matrix, monitoring of compliance and coordination of matrix and related activities    
  • ​​Supporting the Program HS&W KRA requirements and tracking KRA progress and status    
  • ​​Ensuring all appropriate actions are taken to implement the HSEMS, legislative and client contractual requirements   
  • ​​Developing and preparing HS&W presentations    
  • ​​Coordination of HS&W program training such as but not limited to;    
  • ​​Coordination and monitoring of Program HS&W tasks such as but not limited to;       
  • ​​Monitoring and conducting regular HSE governance checks within the program including:   
  • ​​Reviewing and updating HS&W Management Plans    
  • ​​Coordinating and assisting with HS&W internal and external audits    
  • ​​Keeping abreast of HSE legislation, best practice, tools and tactics   
  • ​​Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders   
  • ​​Comply with, and exercise powers (if any), in accordance with Delegation of Authority Matrix   
  • ​​Ensure the company’s HS&W standards are understood and upheld at your workplace.   
  • ​​Proactively deal with HS&W and concerns, by engaging with the people performing the task or activity.   
  • ​​Foster a culture of respect for the environment and communities in which we work to minimise impacts.   
  • ​​Further responsibilities for health and safety, environment and rail safety as specified in the relevant project specific management plans.  


Who are you?

  • Certificate IV in HSW or related
  • More than 2 years’ experience working in WHS in an Administration or Coordinator role
  • More than 12 months experience working in construction – civil, rail, infrastructure or on a major project
  • Intermediate MS Office skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, spelling and grammar
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with all levels of stakeholders
  • Influence and encourage a strong safety focus on the Alliance
  • Ability to travel to and work from site offices in the eastern suburbs
