The opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and driven Senior Legal Counsel to join the Legal & Governance Team. This position reports to the Assistant General Counsel and will contribute to the success of Greater Western Water through the delivery of commercially and strategically astute legal advice and guidance to the business, including to the Board and Executive.

You will work alongside a diverse and talented legal team, across a broad range of practice areas, including statutory interpretation, water law, property, contracts, environmental and planning law, and administrative law, as well as litigation and dispute resolution when required.  You will have a high level of autonomy and the opportunity to manage challenging and interesting subject matter.

This is a full-time, ongoing position working from the Footscray and Sunbury offices, combined with WFH.

Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice and guidance to the business, including at Executive and Board level, across a broad range of areas, including statutory interpretation, contracts and commercial law, water law, property, environment and planning law and administrative law.
  • Providing legal advice and support on the development, negotiation and implementation of contracts and other legal agreements.
  • Independently managing complex or sensitive matters, including civil litigation, under limited direction and navigating resolution or settlement of disputes.
  • Deliver legal training and assistance to employees in areas relevant to the business, to upskill the business in legal literacy.
  • Supporting the Assistant General Counsel to drive and deliver change within the Legal & Governance team, and in the provision of legal services generally, demonstrating professional leadership and excellence in client service and stakeholder engagement.

Skills & Experience

  • At least 6 years post admission experience working in similar roles with minimal supervision, preferably within the construction and/or government sectors. In-house public sector experience will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in one of more of the areas of key practice/technical knowledge.
  • Tertiary qualification in Law and admitted to practice as an Australian legal practitioner under the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Act 2014. 
  • Experience in briefing external legal service providers.
  • Experience in delivering training to non-lawyers is desirable.
