About the position
The Senior Co-ordinator Research Ethics and Biosafety will provide expert advice and guidance in Animal Ethics and relevant research policy and legislation to key research stakeholders including the University’s Animal Ethics and La Trobe Institutional Biosafety Committees and senior management. They will have thorough knowledge and experience of the relevant legislation and guidelines around the use of animals in research, including relevant genetically modified organism, biosafety and biosecurity requirements. They will also have a broader knowledge of other areas of ethics and biosafety and be pro-active in the promotion of research integrity across the University.
Working within the Ethics, Integrity and Biosafety Team the incumbent will provide a seamless and holistic service for key research stakeholders. This includes in addition to work on animal ethics, contribution of knowledge and experience for the human research ethics and biosafety areas as well as working with three Ethics Advisors to best support the Team and the administrative needs of the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees.
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Ethics, Integrity, and Biosafety some of your duties will include:
Responsibility for providing executive-level advice and, in conjunction with the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees, implementing University-wide policy changes on relevant animal ethics, biosafety and biosecurity policy and guidelines. Manage and lead the relevant Animal Ethics and Biosafety Advisor/s that support the administration of the Animal Ethics Committee and the Institutional Biosafety Committees and the functions of both areas. Responsibility for efficient and effective administration of the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees including recruiting new members, managing regulatory reporting on committee composition and streamlining systems and processes. Responsibility for oversight of governance, compliance and policy advice in Animal Ethics, Biosafety and Biosecurity and development and maintenance of accessible documentation on these matters for the use of researchers. Responsible for policy updates and subsequent changes to process in Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety in consultation with the Committee Chairs and key research stakeholders. This includes working with relevant divisions, e.g. La Trobe Animal Teaching and Research Facility and Research Infrastructure to implement these changes. Responsibility for managing renewals, variations, and annual inspections of animal and biosafety/biosecurity licences and certifications held by the University. Responsibility for providing training to researchers in Animal Ethics and Biosafety & Reporting of breaches of responsible research conduct to appropriate committees and assisting the Chairs with appropriate follow up and investigation.Skills & Experience:
A postgraduate degree with at least 5 years animal, gene technology and/or biomedical research experience and/or equivalent research compliance experience within an academic or medical research setting. Knowledge of or demonstrated capacity to understand and interpret the legislation, regulations and standards that impact research involving animals and biological agents (such as the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1989 (Vic) and the Gene Technology Act 2000 (Cth)) in a complex organisational context and ability to communicate and advise stakeholders on new or emerging situations. Experience with regulatory compliance management including conducting inspections and audits and annual compliance reporting Demonstrated management and leadership skills with experience in managing and leading staff to promote a cohesive and effective team including change management. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing policy and procedures in an academic environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to manage consultative relationships with key research stakeholders in relevant areas. Proven track record of successfully managing tasks and projects independently, adapting quickly to changing priorities, and demonstrating initiative in problem solving and decision-making without constant supervision. Ability to develop coordinate and deliver effective training for animal ethics and biosafety in the academic research environment. Proven ability to work in a team where knowledge and experience is shared across areas of expertise.-
