About the Role

The School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Melbourne is seeking two academics to join the urban horticulture team.

One role focuses on education and would entail the development and delivery of initiatives in either community food production, urban greening, garden design and/or landscape design.

The other role emphasises both education and research equally, with responsibilities that would include teaching of a similar range of initiatives, whilst also establishing an urban horticultural research program, and collaborating on projects with external partners.

Successful candidates for both positions will collaborate closely with industry, government, and NGO partners to enhance urban horticulture education at our prestigious Burnley Campus, celebrated for its horticultural excellence and dynamic multidisciplinary focus.

Your responsibilities will include:

Work closely within the urban horticulture teaching team to deliver undergraduate and postgraduate horticulture and urban greening subjects. Design and develop curriculum in either i) horticultural for community food production and urban greening for social and environment benefits, or ii) garden and urban landscape design with a focus on plant-led design for social and environmental benefits. Undertake scholarly activity that supports, enables and disseminates teaching practice within the discipline of urban horticulture. Actively participate at School meetings and contribute to planning activities or committee work to support capacity building in the School/discipline. Prepare and delivery lectures, tutorials, practicals and seminars as appropriate.

Who We Are Looking For
You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build positive, professional relationships with staff, collaborators, and students. Additionally, you will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively and collegially within a diverse workforce.

You will also have:

Completion of a PhD in urban horticulture, urban ecology, urban design, landscape architecture or a related discipline. Demonstrated experience in urban horticulture and expertise in one or more of the following areas: urban food production, plant propagation or urban planting and establishment, plant selection approaches for urban greening or garden design, garden and landscape design and graphics. Demonstrated experience in teaching including developing engaging undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching programs.

For Position 1 (Education & Research) you will have:

A demonstrated aptitude for independent research, with a sound publication record in relevant areas, commensurate with experience and relative to opportunity. Experience in supervising research students, relative to opportunity.

For Position 2 (Education) you will have:

A demonstrated aptitude for independent scholarship as evidenced through a sound publication record or scholarly and creative outputs from professional practice, commensurate with experience and relative to opportunity.
