**The Opportunity**

The Victoria and Tasmania Region within the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is seeking to fill an Engagement Assistant Director role. Located in Hobart, Tasmania, this leadership role drives the NIAA's engagement efforts with First Nations communities in Tasmania.

You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Tasmania Engagement team and lead work that advances the self-determination aspirations of First Nations communities in the State, while supporting the delivery of the Australian Government's priorities, including implementation of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.

The Engagement Assistant Director will:

- work directly with First Nations communities in Tasmania, identify priorities, and broker local solutions to support self-determination aspirations
- build and maintain strong partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders including across First Nations communities, all levels of government and the private sector, to support outcomes under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap
- manage a small team, prioritise workload, and mentor and coach staff
- provide strategic policy and program advice and prepare high-quality briefings and correspondence to support ministers and senior executives
- support the strategic delivery of NIAA funded activities in Tasmania, and conduct risk identification and management
- create a culturally safe workplace by fostering an environment where the concept of culture and how it influences the workplace and interactions is understood.

To succeed in the role, you will have the following capabilities:

- demonstrated experience working with First Nations people in a culturally sensitive manner and a desire to support self-determined approaches to achieve community aspirations
- strong engagement and stakeholder management skills across government, First Nations communities, peak bodies and the private sector
- sound analytical, research, decision-making and problem-solving skills
- ability to provide policy and program advice and identify and escalate emerging risks
- strong leadership, emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills
- experience in managing teams, including allocating and prioritising workload, monitoring performance, mentoring and coaching staff, providing constructive feedback and supporting career aspirations
- strong written communication skills with experience in drafting high quality briefings, correspondence and advice to support ministerial and senior executive decision-making
- experiencing in managing the strategic delivery of programs, projects or special initiatives, and
- demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting First Nations communities in Tasmania, and a commitment to ensuring a culturally safe workplace.

Essential: Must have a current motor vehicle driver's license and be able to undertake intra and interstate travel.
