**About the Role**

**Rare Cancer Patient Support Specialists** (known internally as Specialist Cancer Navigators) play a pivotal role in providing personalised support and guidance to individuals navigating the complexities of rare cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by rare cancers by offering empathetic support, facilitating access to resources, and advocating for patient-centred care.

Reporting to the Head of Patient programs, your key responsibilities will include:

- Serving as a primary point of contact (primarily via telephone / videoconferencing) for individuals diagnosed with rare cancers and their families, offering emotional support, practical guidance, and tailored information throughout their cancer journey.
- Conducting comprehensive assessments of individual needs, preferences, and challenges to develop personalised care plans and strategies.
- Providing information and education on rare cancers, including treatment options, clinical trials, supportive care services, and financial assistance programs.
- Collaborating closely with healthcare professionals, including oncologists, nurses, and allied health professionals, to ensure coordinated and holistic care delivery.
- Advocating for patient rights and preferences within the healthcare system, addressing barriers to access and navigating insurance, reimbursement, and disability issues.
- Facilitating connections with peer support networks, community organisations, and other relevant resources enhances social support and empowers individuals to become active participants in their care.
- Maintaining accurate documentation of interactions and outcomes, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards.

This role is offered with a 2.5-year maximum term (until 30 June 2027) aligned with government funding. However, opportunities for extension or permanent placement may arise during the contract term.

**About You**

As someone with previous experience in the healthcare industry, you will possess a passion for positively supporting people with rare and less common cancers and have a positive attitude and approach that reflects **RCA's** missions and values. Furthermore, you will have high adaptability, resilience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic organisational setting with a proven ability to build relationships across diverse stakeholders.

To be considered for this role, you must have relevant experience, skills, knowledge of the healthcare industry, and the required qualifications/certificates.
- Tertiary qualifications or commensurate significant experience in one or more of the following areas: nursing, social work, counselling, primary/community health development, health promotion and project management, social sciences and medicine.
- Clinical experience in oncology or rare diseases is preferred.
- Strong understanding of the psychosocial impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on individuals and families.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, conveying empathy, compassion, and respect in all interactions.
- Demonstrated ability to assess needs, develop care plans, and navigate complex healthcare systems.
- Commitment to person-centred care and advocacy for equitable access to healthcare resources.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and electronic health record systems.
- Have your own vehicle and be willing to undertake intrastate and interstate travel occasionally.
