Glass Wash

The Glass Wash and Media Preparation Technician is accountable for providing technical support to Precinct scientific staff by preparing media and solutions necessary for the experimental work of the research staff. The technician is also required to manage the Glass Wash.

THE OPPORTUNITY

You will be maintaining an awareness at all times of expenditure on supplies and contribute ideas on how to minimise costs and improve efficiency. You will be washing laboratory glass and plastic items and also provides a sterilisation service.

Media Preparation supplies more than forty (40) items of standard media and solutions. It also provides the service of preparing special requests of less common solutions according to a supplied recipe.

**Salary**: Up to $75,000 + 10.5% super (depending on experience)
Employment Type: Permanent full time position

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Principal Responsibilities

It is imperative that all care and concentration be taken with regards to washing glassware and the preparation of the media. The results of many experiments are dependent on these solutions and equipment. The Glass Wash and Media Preparation Technician's responsibilities include the following:

- Cleaning laboratory lab items in laboratory glasswashers and hand washing where required.
- Preparing media and solution (broth, agars, buffers, etc.) by heating, mixing and pHing solutions
- Sterilisation by autoclaving all building needs including solutions, glassware, plasticware, and pipette tips, etc.
- Completing a quality control of the service, including maintaining records of preparation of batches of media and solutions, usage of service and also for cleaning and maintenance of the equipment
- Maintaining a clean and tidy work area
- Cleaning, testing and calibration of equipment when required
- Assist in maintaining the Chemical Label library and production of labels, as required
- Assisting with advice for Chemical waste
- Other duties as required

ABOUT YOU

He/she should also possess the following personal attributes and qualities:

- A Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent.
- The incumbent should have experience and sound knowledge of media preparation procedures.
- A willingness to learn new skills and be flexible in work practices
- The ability to work as a member of a team
- Ability to work autonomously
- The incumbent must be able to manage time and prioritise duties so that all glassware is washed and media required is prepared.
- must immediately report any unsafe work conditions or equipment to management; and
- must participate in compulsory safety training.
