**Role Details**

The Operational Support Manager is a role within Communities and Justice and is accountable to the Assistant General Manager, Accommodation and Security Services for:

- Leading and supporting the provision of contemporary youth custodial practice that promotes relational security and the voice of young people in decisions that affect them.
- Leading and supporting Operational Supervisors and Behaviour Support Officers and collaborating with clinical stakeholders in the co-design and implementation of support and risk management strategies for children and young people with unique needs and complex behaviour presentations.
- Implementing initiatives to improve system-wide responses to children and young people and link them in with reforms designed to support integration into the community.

Key outcomes and accountabilities:
1. Lead, mentor, provide direction, oversight and performance management to a multi-disciplinary workforce operating in a custodial setting.
2. Manage incidents and emergencies in accordance with agency procedures, policies and legislation, including taking command of incident management where necessary.
3. Implement evidence-based behaviour management strategies to children and young people whose behaviours may manifest in violent, aggressive and/or self-harming behaviour and continually research current best practice and innovative strategies designed to reduce criminogenic risk and offending behaviour and support successful community reintegration.
4. Contribute to the development of an operational workforce that is child-focused, trauma informed, culturally responsive, disability aware and champions the rights of all young people in custody.
5. Oversee the use of protective and restrictive actions across Kurlana Tapa Youth Justice Centre and monitor staff compliance against legislation and procedure, while promoting the use of least-restrictive practices.
6. Contribute to operational planning, compliance, reform, governance support and compliance and management activities.
7. Contribute to change management programs, evaluate ongoing performance, identify crucial success factors and initiate continuous improvement strategies and reform activities, including establishing, managing and monitoring business practices, systems and procedures to achieve required outcomes and provide an efficient and effective operation that enables Kurlana Tapa Youth Justice Centre to achieve business objectives.
8. Lead and contribute to collaborative partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to improve the engagement of young people in custody and that support reintegration into the community.
Note: Any other responsibilities in line with the classification level of the role as assigned by Line Manager and/or the Department. The responsibilities as specified above may be altered in accordance with the changing requirements of the role.

Must hold a current Australian issued driver's licence (equivalent to minimum class C).

**Essential Qualifications**

Incumbent is expected to attain Certificate IV in Youth Work or equivalent qualification within 12 months of being appointed to the role. Full funding and study support to achieve the attainment of this qualification is provided by DHS.
Tertiary qualification in youth justice, behavioural/social sciences, or education and/or or senior level experience managing multidisciplinary teams within a criminal justice or human services environment is desirable.

**About the Business**

Community and Family Services supports vulnerable people and families to participate in social and economic life and build stronger communities. This division comprises three key areas:
**Safer Family Services (SFS) **provides a wide range of intensive family support services to children, young people and families experiencing a high risk of statutory intervention from the child protection or youth justice systems. Services also include family support, community development and parenting and youth programs.

The **Office for Women **works across government and the community towards achieving gender equity and positive change for women in South Australia by developing policy and advising on issues affecting women to improve their safety, wellbeing and economic security. The office also oversees the Women's Information Service to support women over the phone, online and in person, as wel
