Purpose of specific work area and position
Bushfire Mitigation is responsible for the statewide strategic management, promotion and expansion of preventative bushfire mitigation strategies, fire prevention, planning and education programs, including to maintain effective working relationship with the Fire Warden Network, Fire Management Groups, Interdepartmental Committee for Bushfires and public and private sector stakeholder groups.
Reporting to the Regional Manager, you will be responsible for regional coordination of mitigation strategies, education programs and support the region with the fire wardens and the promotion of the Permit to Light Fire System in Queensland.
You will also be responsible for the overall management and support of the bushfire network including links with the Regional Interdepartmental Committee framework, Area Fire Management Groups and Disaster Management arrangements. You will be required to provide regional coordination of the program of works and support for the Bushfire Safety Officers and work with QFES Community Engagement to assist in the delivery of relevant community safety material to ensure a coordinated department-wide approach.
The Manager, Bushfire Mitigation is the conduit for information and data flow to the state Office of Bushfire Mitigation.
We are seeking Expressions of Interest from QFES Rural Fire Service (RFS) staff or volunteers in conjunction with the current generic Inspector, RFS role description. (see additional information below).

- Can demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders from rural and near rural communities.
Primary duties
In addition to the generic Inspector (FSINSP), RFS role description, the purpose of the regional Manager, Bushfire Mitigation position includes but is not limited to:
- May be required to undertake responsibilities as a Chief Fire Warden once trained for an Area/Region including the management and support to fire wardens in the region and across the state.
- Oversee the Permit to Light Fire system, and develop and implement enhancements stratagies including supporting the orgainsational review outcomes on the system and its network, i.e. the implementation of an online option.
- Manage bushfire mitigation and prevention regulatory tools within the region concerning notifications, fire bans,gazettles etc.
- Plan bushfire mitigation activities and strategies, including systematic identification of priorities and evaluation of activities effectiveness and residual hazard and risk.
- Be the regional liaison and support for partners and stakeholders to access bushfire related intelligence information and tools, working collaboratively with Fire Behaviour Analysts.
- Lead and manage regional Bushfire Safety Officers to support the delivery of bushfire mitigation activies by brigades and partners to enhance bushire preparedness, education and engagement.
- Manage and champion traditional and cultural burning program practice within the region and across the state.
- Be an active member of the Senior Leadership Team within the region.
Additional information
- Hold the rank of substantive Inspector, RFS, however Rural Officer Two (RFSO2) with the appropriate skills and knowledge are encouraged to apply.
- Volunteers and external parties with appropriate skills are highly encouraged to apply, noting that they may be asked to provide additional information to satisfy internal policies.
- Have a proven commitment to maintaining bushfire competencies and operating in a regional team environment.
- The Incumbent will be required to travel and work within the region and may also be required to undertake intrastate, interstate deployment travel as required.
