**About the Role**
The Counsellor role at Swinburne University of Technology is a key part of the Health Services team, delivering holistic mental health care aligned with the university's Health & Wellbeing values. Reporting to the Associate Director Swinburne Health Service, the Counsellor is a qualified mental health professional—such as a mental health nurse, counsellor, or social worker—who provides inclusive, high-quality counselling services to support students in achieving their personal and academic goals. The role primarily focuses on young adults from diverse backgrounds, aiming to improve access to mental health services and enhance outcomes through recovery and relapse prevention strategies.
In this position, the Counsellor conducts advanced psychosocial assessments and delivers targeted interventions for students and their families. They also contribute to the design and implementation of mental health initiatives aligned with Swinburne Health Service's strategic direction. These services play a vital role in supporting student retention and academic success, while also promoting positive health experiences across the university community.
**About You**
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:?
**Experience & Skills**
**(Essential)**:
- Strong background in mental health care, including assessments, crisis intervention, and evidence-based therapies.
- Knowledge of relevant Victorian and national legislation (e.g., Mental Health Act 2014).
- High-level triage, organisational, and communication skills.
- Experience with diverse populations and electronic health records.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and patient management systems.
- Commitment to community engagement, continuous improvement, and consumer-focused care.
**(Preferable)**:
- Understanding of systems like Centrelink, NDIS, National Redress Scheme.
- Experience supporting students from underrepresented groups and working in tertiary education or with young adults.
**Qualifications (Essential)**:
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Mental Health Nursing, Counselling, or related field with minimum 4 years' experience (or equivalent training/experience).
- Full registration with AHPRA, AASW, PACFA (clinical), or ACA (Level 3 minimum).
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
**Other Requirements**:
- Valid Working with Children Check (or ability to obtain before starting).
