As a Counsellor at the University of Melbourne, you'll have the opportunity to provide crucial psychological support to a diverse student and staff community. You'll deliver individual and group therapy, workshops, and training, with a focus on short-term interventions and risk management. This role allows you to utilise your expertise in a dynamic university setting, contributing to mental health initiatives that directly impact the wellbeing of the academic community.
Your responsibilities will include:
Provide High-Quality Psychological Counselling: Conduct assessments, manage high-risk situations, and deliver short-term interventions for students and staff.
Develop and Deliver Mental Health Initiatives: Plan and implement in-person and online therapeutic groups, workshops, and training programs.
Ensure Clinical Excellence: Participate in supervision, maintain case records, and stay current with counselling practices and emerging issues.
Collaborate and Contribute: Work within a multidisciplinary team, potentially supervise interns, and actively contribute to a safe, inclusive workplace environment.
You may be a great fit if:
You are a registered psychologist with clinical or counselling endorsement or an accredited mental health social worker, possessing extensive counselling experience and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a university setting.
You may also:
Be a registered psychologist (clinical or counselling endorsed) or accredited mental health social worker with a relevant postgraduate degree.
Have extensive experience in providing counselling and psychotherapeutic services to diverse populations.
Possess strong skills in planning and delivering therapeutic group interventions and workshops.
Demonstrate expertise in assessing and managing complex clinical matters within a short-term counselling model.
Show cultural responsiveness and the ability to work effectively with individuals from various backgrounds.
Have experience in clinical supervision and working within a university context (desirable).

Your new team – Counselling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS is part of Wellbeing Services in Student and Scholarly Services and provides free psychological counselling to students and staff (both in di vidual and group) and delivers a range of training and consultancy activities. The service is led by a Head , with three Senior Counsellors, overseeing the day-to-day operation of the service that comprises around 35 people including Counsellors , Locum/Psychology Registra r s Counsellors, Intern Counsellors and reception/admin staff.
