Safety And Compliance Advisor

Southern Queensland Correctional Centre is a women's facility located in Spring Creek, approximately 17 kms from the township of Gatton in the Lockyer Valley. The centre provides high security secure placement accommodation for sentenced and remand women that are classified as high or low security. Women who enter the criminal justice system often come from lives characterised by sexual, emotional and physical abuse, domestic and family violence, substance addiction and mental health problems.
QCS provides a gender-responsive, trauma-informed approach to managing women with the goal of offering an opportunity to truly rehabilitate andescape the cycle that led to crime. It is important to recognise that to change a woman, is to change a generation.
The role forms part of a network of Safety and Compliance Advisors across Queensland and is responsible for working with Centre management to embed a culture of safety through promoting work practices and behaviours that positively impact the safety of staff, prisoners and visitors within the Centre.

**The essential requirements for this role are**:

- Contemporary knowledge of work health and safety legislation and experience in a correctional or similar environment.
- Sound ability in providing high level advice regarding effective work health and safety practices, risk management methodologies and strategies to reduce the risk of harm and assaults in a correctional or similar environment.
- Ability to effectively research and analyse data, identify issues and provide actionable advice, including through written reports.
- Experience in conducting reviews or audits or incidents and operational practices to ensure compliance and improve safety outcomes.
- Ability to manage and prioritise work and conflicting demands in a complex and challenging environment.
- Ability to develop and maintain relationships, communicate, consult and influence a range of stakeholders to promote a culture of safety amongst staff, prisoners and visitors.

**In this role you will**:

- Develop and maintain the Correctional Centre Local Action Plan to promote a culture of health, safety and wellbeing, including consultation and engagement with staff, reviewing and monitoring outcomes, undertaking reporting and analysis and providing advice.
- Manage the implementation of the QCS Violence Prevention Strategy and QCS Drug Strategy within the Correctional Centre through the Local Action Plan.
- Conduct internal reviews and audits to assess compliance or operational risks and develop risk management strategies.
- Provide advice on operational practices to ensure compliance with relevant workplace health and safety legislative requirements and promote ongoing continuous improvement of operational practices aimed at delivering a safe environment for staff, prisoners and visitors.
- Develop and manage processes to support staff assaulted at work and advise management on strategies to improve safety outcomes and reduce risk of assaults or harm to staff, prisoners and visitors.
- Undertake research, benchmarking, reporting and analysis to identify risk and trends and to inform strategies and to develop best practice initiatives and innovative solutions to reduce the risk of assaults or harm to staff, prisoners and visitors.
- Design and deliver targeted engagement strategies for assault perpetrators or those at risk, encouraging acknowledgement of their actions and seeking commitment to positive behavioural change.
- Manage the Centre-based Violence Prevention Committee (VPC).
