Disaster Call Centre Operator Casual position Our Ideal Candidate Hinchinbrook Shire Council is calling on reliable, community-focused individuals who are ready to step up and support their region during times of emergency and natural disaster.

As part of our disaster support team, you'll work alongside Council staff and emergency services to assist with critical response and recovery efforts.
You'll bring strong communication skills, a proactive attitude, and a willingness to work collaboratively under pressure.
No prior experience is required – full training will be provided.

General Salary Information This position is classified as Level 1 under the Hinchinbrook Shire Council Local Government Officers (Stream A) Certified Agreement.
Casual rate is $39.173 per hour (inclusive of casual loading) + applicable shift penalties.
Key Responsibilities
Respond to incoming calls from residents during disaster events in a professional, calm and empathetic manner.
Provide accurate and timely information based on official Council and disaster agency updates.
Record and log call details and service requests in Council systems (e.g. Guardian).
Escalate urgent or high-risk calls in accordance with established procedures.

Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to remain calm under pressure;
Proven customer service experience;
Ability to quickly learn and apply Council procedures, messaging, and systems;
Competent in the use of computers and digital systems (e.g. data entry, Microsoft Office);
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and public holidays during disaster activation periods; and
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in recording information.
Desirable
Knowledge of local geography and community services in the Council area.
