ABOUT US
ResTech provides professional research and development services in electrical and electronic engineering. As a collaboration between the University of Newcastle and Ampcontrol, the union bridges the gap between academia and industry, enabling industrial clients to access contemporary and fundamental knowledge and providing commercially viable solutions via a broad range of experience and technologies.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
This is your opportunity to join the ResTech team as an R&D Engineer. Based at the University of Newcastle Campus, you will work closely with a team of world-class engineers to design, develop, and document software systems that enable a new generation of industrial control, communications and safety products.
This is a unique role that spans embedded Linux environments, device management frameworks, and user-facing applications. You will be engaged in diverse, multi-disciplinary projects that connect electronics, control systems, and software into complete commercial solutions.
With a focus on system-level software development and deployment, you will contribute to the delivery of robust, scalable, and user-friendly technologies. Key objectives include:
- Designing and developing software platforms for embedded Linux devices, including deployment and update management.
- Building applications and services for product configuration and management (e.g. Python back-end servers, JavaScript front-ends, Flutter mobile apps).
- Developing robust interfaces between embedded controllers, cloud services, and user applications.
- Actively initiating ideas for innovation in software architecture, technology platforms, and engineering methodologies.
- Contributing to feasibility studies, proposals, and technical documentation to support new product development.
- Maintaining a program of professional development to stay current with modern software design and deployment practices.
ABOUT YOU
Your willingness to be hands-on in a specialised R&D environment will be complemented by the following:
- Degree-level qualifications in software engineering, computer science, electrical/mechatronics, or a related field.
- Demonstrable experience (ideally 2+ years) in one or more of:
- Embedded Linux development and deployment (Yocto, Buildroot, containerisation, OTA update systems).
- Python-based back-end/server development.
- Modern web development (JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Angular, or similar).
- Cross-platform mobile development (Flutter desirable).
- Strong understanding of networking, system integration, and interfaces between embedded devices and user applications.
- Technical writing and communication skills to clearly convey complex system designs.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, version control, and modern development practices.
