The opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Food Policy Senior Coordinator to join our passionate team and help bring our vision of a healthier Western Australia to life. You'll be joining a dedicated, friendly team committed to creating meaningful, lasting change in community health.

As part of our Cancer Prevention and Research Division, you'll support our evidence-based team, whose mission is to make healthy eating and physical activity more accessible and achievable for all West Australians.

In this role as Food Policy Senior Coordinator, you'll lead a small team to support key initiatives focused on helping accelerate policy and legislative reforms that make it easier for everyone in Western Australia to eat well and live well.

Based in Subiaco, this position is a fixed-term part time contract (0.8 FTE) and will run until 30 June 2027.

What you'll be doing:


• Coordinate all aspects of the Increasing Healthy Eating project, including developing and implementing the operational plan, assessing program barriers and developing practical solutions in collaboration with the Food and Movement Manager.


• Provide policy expertise to state and national obesity prevention initiatives contributing to healthier eating efforts and the broader work of Cancer Council WA.


• Lead advocacy strategies and identify and pursue research opportunities that complement policy objectives.


• Coordinate regular meetings of the WA NGO Obesity Policy Consensus Group.


• Work with legal and policy advisors to identify regulatory reform opportunities that support healthy, active communities in WA and Australia.


• Prepare and submit responses and objections to government, including local fast-food planning applications, to counter harmful industry expansion.


• Contribute to national policy through active participation in relevant Cancer Council Australia committees and subgroups.


• Lead preparation of annual and ad hoc reports and presentations.


• Represent Cancer Council WA at relevant meetings, seminars, and community or professional events.

About you

To succeed in this role, you'll have:


• A tertiary qualification in public health or a policy-related field.


• A qualification in law or experience in a legal or policy role (highly desirable).


• At least five years' experience in public health policy development and advocacy.


• Strong experience in building and maintaining effective working relationships across diverse stakeholders.


• Sound knowledge of obesity prevention issues and healthy eating efforts, methods, and approaches.


• Experience preparing Government submissions, Ministerial correspondence, and policy briefs.


• Experience supervising junior staff.


• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and referencing software.


• The ability to work both independently and as part of a supportive team.


• Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and public speaking.


• Experience in health research methods and evaluation.
