The Porgera Gold Mine will employ nearly 3,000 Papua New Guineans at full production, and over the last 30 years of life of the mine it has contributed approximately 10% of Papua New Guinea's total annual exports.

About the role

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Open Pit to join our Mining Technical Services Team. Reporting to the Manager Technical Services, you will provide specialist geotechnical engineering support to the Porgera open pit operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable production through effective slope design, monitoring, and risk management. Key responsibilities include developing and reviewing pit slope designs, conducting stability analyses, and recommending slope geometries and support systems. The position oversees ground control and monitoring programs, interprets data, and establishes trigger action response plans. It also manages geotechnical risks, supports mine safety systems, and ensures compliance with standards. The role involves mentoring junior engineers, providing technical guidance to operational teams, and leading reviews and audits. Additionally, it requires managing geotechnical and geological data, integrating hydrogeological information into designs, and contributing to mine planning, reporting, feasibility studies, and closure plans.

You will model safety behaviours and coach and develop your team, working with your team to assess and manage risk.  NPL operates in a complex environment that requires the successful applicant to be a self-starter, with strong ability in delivery to support the mines successful operation whilst coordinating the efforts of your team members to complete projects according to plan in a timely and safe manner.

About you

As the successful applicant, you will hold a Bachelor's Degree in geotechnical, geological, or mining engineering (master's preferred) and at least 10 years of open pit geotechnical experience in large hard rock mines, ideally gold or copper. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in slope stability analysis, numerical modelling, and ground monitoring systems, with proven ability to manage geotechnical risks in complex geological and climatic conditions. Experience in remote, culturally diverse, or expatriate environments—particularly in PNG—is highly regarded, along with proficiency in geotechnical software. Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills are essential.

This role is offered on a FIFO basis either from Papua New Guinea or Australia/New Zealand with a 21/14 roster on a contract basis with a highly competitive remuneration package.
