The Role
BGC is seeking a Graduate Geological or Geotechnical Engineer with a passion for applied earth sciences and a dedication to lifelong learning in a technically challenging and inspiring team environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, relevant work experience and a desire to travel and work in diverse and remote conditions. Graduate Engineers at BGC can expect a mix of field- and office-based work supporting a variety of clients within in the mining sector, completed under the guidance of technical experts.
Typical field work includes site investigations (including drilling and downhole testing, testing pitting, field mapping, geophysical surveys, instrumentation installation, river/stream inspection, and engineering geology assessment) and construction monitoring. Field work can involve stints of up to 2-3 weeks in remote areas, and may include multiple shifts, or a scheduled rotation. Typical office work includes reporting and interpretation of field data, engineering or geoscience analysis including material and site characterization, interpretation of instrumentation data, and contribution to designs.
This role is a full-time position based in Brisbane, Australia with opportunities to travel to our international offices and work on projects worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Contributing to geotechnical investigation, assessment, design, and construction monitoring at mine sites for waste management facilities (e.g. tailings), open pits, underground excavations, access roads, and building foundations. Work could include foundation inspection, oversight of material placement and design conformance as well as interpretation of field or instrumentation data, seepage, slope stability and deposition analysis, reporting and data reduction, and preparing construction drawings and specifications.
- Assist with data management and reporting for tailings-related projects, including compiling field logs, organising instrumentation data, preparing figures and tables for technical reports, and supporting document control and quality assurance processes during feasibility, design, and construction phases.
- Supporting surface water assessments for environmental baseline studies, water supply projects, design of remediation works, design and construction of water management infrastructure, balance studies, hydrologic assessments, and engineering geology risk assessments.
Required Education, Experience and Competencies
- A recent graduate of an undergraduate degree in Civil-Geotechnical or Geological Engineering
- 0-5 years of relevant work experience
- Excellent written, presentation, and oral communications
- MS Office proficiency
- Proficiency using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software is an asset
- A second language is an asset
- A post-graduate degree is an asset

Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing
To ensure we meet our client's compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position. The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee's first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.
Driver's License
BGC requires employees to hold a valid, full driver's license in the jurisdiction where they will be employed. A Traffic History Report must be submitted upon hire. Employees must be able to drive a field pick-up truck. Employees are required to complete BGC Driver Training and a Driver Assessment. The estimated base salary for this position is $75,000 to $100,000 AUD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes an annual bonus, training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
