Policy Analyst

  • Salary: $97,955 - $111,142 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Fixed-Term position until 30 June 2027
  • Usual hours of work: Full time (flexibility may be available)

The Role

As a Policy Analyst, you will provide crucial analytical and policy support to the International Policy and Export Strategy team. This role combines strategic policy development with advanced data analysis capabilities to inform evidence-based decision making and support Victoria's international trade and export objectives.

This position requires strong analytical skills, proficiency in data visualisation tools, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable policy recommendations. This position is well suited to professionals with experience in policy development and data analysis; particularly those with a background in economics, public policy, or international trade.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Lead data analysis projects to deliver evidence-based insights for international policy initiatives and to support decision making within the Trade team.
  • Support policy development for international engagement frameworks and export strategies, conducting research and analysis to advance Victoria's trade priorities.
  • Prepare briefings, policy papers and correspondence on trade in Victoria, ensuring high-quality analysis and recommendations that align with government objectives and support executive decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain data platforms and digital systems to facilitate information sharing, enhance collaborative workflows and improve data accessibility across the trade team.
  • Research emerging trends in global trade and international policy developments to identify opportunities and risks for Victoria's export prospects.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental policy activities to ensure integrated approaches to trade policy, working collaboratively with other branches to align initiatives with broader government priorities.

The Team

The position of Policy Analyst will work within the Trade branch, which sits within Industry, Trade and Investment (ITI) group.

The Industry, Trade and Investment (ITI) group works closely with businesses locally and globally to grow Victorian jobs, drive innovation and increase Victoria's international competitiveness. ITI champions Victoria as a destination of choice for trade and international investment, international education and innovation. ITI harnesses specialist knowledge of key industries and global markets to develop Victoria's priority sectors, boost trade activities, enhance productivity and contribute to economic growth.

The Group does this by: forming trust based relationships with businesses – from global enterprises to small businesses and startups; connecting the state to global opportunities, including through the Victorian Government Trade and Investment (VGTI) network; facilitating new investment and business expansion: supporting agencies, regulators and statutory authorities to meet all required approval deadlines for projects of state significant; developing and attracting world class talent; supporting key industry and manufacturing capabilities; supporting Victorian businesses to excel in global markets; strengthening the State's digital ecosystem and its linkages with industry; accelerating the growth and impact of Victoria's research translation and commercialisation capabilities; and advocating for a competitive, fair and inclusive business environment.

About You

To be successful in this role you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated exp erience in policy development and analysis, preferably in international trade, economics, or related fields.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and visualisation tools, particularly Excel, Power BI and Powerpoint to deliver research outcomes.
  • Strong collaborative, interpersonal and consultation skills enabling effective engagement across all levels of the organisation and with external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including ability to prepare high-level briefings.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
