The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Policy Adviser to join its Medical Practise Team on a 12-month parental leave contract. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to high-level policy development and advocacy in the health sector.

About the Organisation

The AMA's Medical Practise Team is responsible for advancing the organisation's strategic objectives across a broad range of health-related areas, including medical regulation, public and private hospital funding, digital health, aged care, and scopes of practice. The team provides expert policy advice to the AMA Federal Council and facilitates engagement with internal committees and external stakeholders.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Policy Manager, the Policy Adviser will be responsible for providing high-quality policy advice and undertaking research and analysis on a range of health policy issues. The role will focus on areas including health technology assessment, the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme, and aged care policy.

What you'll do:

  • Conduct research and analysis on medical practice and health policy issues
  • Draft policy and position statements, submissions, briefing papers, and reports
  • Provide policy advice to senior representatives for meetings with government officials and media engagements
  • Represent the organisation at external meetings, workshops, and conferences
  • Provide secretariat support to one or more internal committees, including scheduling, agenda preparation, and minute-taking
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to the achievement of team objectives and undertake additional duties as required

What you'll bring:

  • Demonstrated experience in a policy advisory role or similar
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to interpret quantitative data
  • Proven ability to identify key issues and provide evidence-based policy advice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare succinct briefings under time constraints
  • Capacity to work independently, exercise initiative, and manage competing priorities
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships
  • Proficiency in MS Office 365 and document management systems (e.g. TRIM)
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Health, Politics, or Social Sciences will be highly regarded
