We are seeking a Water Treatment Planning Engineer on a temporary fixed term basis for 4 months to join our Planning and Engineering team within our Customer Delivery division to lead the planning for Hunter Water's drinking water treatment plants.

The Opportunity

As the Water Treatment Planning Engineer you will be a senior member of the Water Planning Team, responsible for leading the planning for Hunter Water's drinking water treatment plants. This role ensures the treatment plants have the capacity, quality, and reliability to ensure safe, reliable and efficient drinking water services for our customers and community, and facilitates sustainable growth and meets regulatory requirements.

What you'll do:

  • Lead capacity reviews, annual risk reviews, treatment process investigations, hydraulic investigations, environmental investigations, network planning studies, catchment management investigations, options development studies and other investigations related to the supply and treatment of drinking water.
  • Obtain and manage appropriate data, information and knowledge related to water treatment requirements, design and performance for use in water planning and other areas of Hunter Water.
  • Take ownership of forward planning, safety performance, knowledge management and ongoing tracking of risks, issues and opportunities for Hunter Waters water treatment plants.
  • Project Management:
  • Manage water treatment planning projects following Hunter Water's asset creation framework (initiation phase), effectively utilising internal and external expertise.
  • Convene and participate in interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Manage consultants and consulting contracts to ensure the timely delivery of projects in consultation with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Service and infrastructure planning and funding approval:
  • Formally document options analysis, cost estimation, economic appraisal and business cases to obtain approval and funding to commence the design phase of treatment plant upgrades.
  • Providing technical advice, guidance, support and information on water treatment plant performance to internal and external stakeholders.

What you'll need to be successful:

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical, Environmental Engineering or equivalent suitable professional qualifications and experience
  • Experience and understanding of water and/or wastewater treatment systems
  • Proven experience in undertaking stakeholder engagement on planning projects
  • Proven experience in managing consultants and/or contractors to effectively deliver outcomes
  • Experience in developing capital, annual O&M estimates and developing economic appraisals
  • Experience in preparing business cases and/or funding approval documentation
  • Class C Driver's Licence

Desirable Criteria:

  • Water treatment planning/design/construction/operations experience
  • Drinking water catchment management experience
  • Contract management experience
  • Drinking water quality management system experience
