St George Hospital is seeking a suitably qualified, motivated Surgeon to fill the role of Surgical Superintendent.
The role is a 3 year fixed term Staff Specialist role with an allocation of 0.5FTE as Surgical Superintendent and 0.2FTE Staff Specialist allocated to clinical practice in the relevant subspecialty area of expertise. You will be required to participate in the General Surgery on call roster and the on call roster in your subspecialty of expertise. Elective surgery operating time will be allocated to accommodate your clinical responsibilities.
The Surgical Superintendent role is responsible for the operational development and implementation of initiatives, programs, and projects that support the main learning and supervision needs of Surgical Trainees in surgical specialties. The successful applicant is able to actively contribute to the development of surgical pre SET and SET trainees.
Responsibilities of the Surgical Superintendent include:
- Coordinate the established weekly formal JMO and Registrar Teaching Programs, and surgical Morbidity and Mortality meetings in conjunction with the Medical Director Division of Surgery.
- Ensure that pre SET trainees satisfy position and training requirements.
- Supervision, management and coordination of Basic Surgical Trainee and accredited trainee rostering in consultation with the Network Director of Surgical Training.
- Supervision, management and coordination of streamed Senior Resident Medical Officer (Medical) rotations in conjunction with the Junior Medical Officer Unit.
- Local line management responsibilities for Surgical trainees including performance management, grievance management and patient complaint/incident management.
- Oversight of clinical handover activities by Surgical trainees.

- Registration or eligible for registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide AHPRA Registration Number on application and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and/or equivalent specialist recognition as provided for by the Health Insurance Act 1973 with demonstrated subspecialty experience in a relevant area to practice General Surgery.
Demonstrated experience in and commitment to Medical Education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and involvement or understanding of RACS education programs and policies.
Evidence of continuing medical education and self-monitoring/audit practices consistent with the scope of practice requirements of the position.
- Proven capacity and/or experience in the provision of effective high quality service in the specialty, demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position including evidence of participation in quality improvement activities relevant to the specialty.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching with experience in teaching both undergraduate and post graduate students and other staff of the hospital.
- Demonstrate the skills and attitudes appropriate as a senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team across multiple sites. Demonstrated commitment to provision of a high standard of clinical care in the public sector setting.
- Demonstrated experience in and commitment to research relevant to the role and needs of the Department.
