The Role

The Clinical Midwifery Consultant (CMC) – Complex Pregnancy Care (CPC) will provide expertise and leadership in midwifery practice, underpinned by education and research, for women, midwives and other health care professionals and the community. As an expert clinician, the CPC CMC will contribute to and take a lead role in the support of midwifery practice especially related to case management of pregnant women that have significant vulnerabilities.

The CPC CMC will have an excellent working knowledge of psychosocial issues related to vulnerable families and the potential impact on the children and families. Will support and educate clinical staff to care for women with child protection requirements. The CPC CMC will display evidence of creating an effective team and establishing strong networks across disciplines including external government and non- government service providers to enhance service delivery including the Department of Communities and Justice. The role will demand advanced leadership skills to support and guide midwifery staff working within a multidisciplinary Model of Care for women with complex care needs including expert knowledge of working within a child protection framework and primary health care model. The role will chair and lead the weekly Multidisciplinary Case Discussion meeting in line with the SAFESTART Strategic Policy framework.

The role will demonstrate expert midwifery knowledge through advanced clinical problem solving and decision-making and will play a lead role in Clinical Governance Documents development for Women's & Children's Health. The role will be responsible for the governance of maternity Clinical Documents including Clinical Business Rules (CIBR)'s, Standing Orders, Work Place Instructions and brochures for women. Until additional resource is allocated to the TSH, Governance of Clinical Documents will be across 2 maternity sites at St George (STG) and The Sutherland (TSH) hospitals which requires an in depth understanding of the systems and processes for - Clinical Governance Documents development and approval. The role will assure a robust process across the sites that underpins the delivery of safe patient care and high-quality service delivery. The CMC will monitor and report on the SGH and TSH process for the development, revision, dissemination, implementation and evaluation of Clinical Governance Documents including reporting and escalation of policy directives to the SGH and TSH Executive as part of the quality assurance process. The CMC will work in close liaison with the W&CH Maternity/Nurse Unit Managers, CMC/CNC's, Educators and the Obstetric Lead for Clinical Governance Documents development.

Selection Criteria

  • Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Midwife with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) with a minimum of five (5) years post registration midwifery practice experience and tertiary qualifications in a relevant field or actively undertaking same.
  • Demonstrated high level of advanced communication and interpersonal skills across a variety of mediums and proven ability to write for a variety of documents including complex psychosocial management plans.
  • Demonstrate experience and a thorough understanding of working within the NSW SAFE START Strategic policy framework, including the ability to lead and chair the Multidisciplinary Case Discussion meeting.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience caring for pregnant women with complex care needs and psychosocial vulnerabilities including a thorough understanding of NSW legislative requirements for mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Proven senior leadership skills with the ability to provide expert clinical guidance when supporting the complex care midwifery team to meet the needs of women with significant vulnerabilities
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of a Clinical Document Governance framework including the role of evidence based research and National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards in policy development
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the strategies and systems required for approval, dissemination and implementation of new and updated Clinical Governance Documents
  • Demonstrated previous experience in complex care in an acute care facility
