CCNSW we're here for meaningful careers that feel good.

About the team:

The Cancer Information and Support Services Division (CISS) aims to empower and support people affected by cancer, so that no-one faces cancer alone. This Division assists people as they navigate the cancer journey, easing their emotional and practical burdens and helping them make informed decisions.

The Practical Support Services team provides support to people affected by cancer, ensuring practical needs are met throughout their cancer trajectory. The services offered include pro bono legal and workplace advice, support with accommodation and transport to and from treatment, as well as various types of financial support. These services aim to meet the legal, financial and practical needs of people affected by cancer and contribute to their well-being by reducing stress and improving their quality of life.

About the role:

Working alongside the Practical Support Services team, the key purpose of the Pro Bono Coordinator is to coordinate the delivery of pro bono legal, financial planning and workplace professional services for people affected by cancer. This support is delivered by partnering with external pro bono partners across the country to provide free advice to patients and carers when they cannot afford to access this.

This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term contract based at our Woolloomooloo office, offered under a hybrid working model.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Oversee case management of clients referred to Cancer Council's Legal, Financial Planning and Workplace Referral Services, including:

  • Contact cancer patients and carers over the phone to determine their eligibility for pro bono advice.

  • Identify clients' legal, financial and workplace issues and determine appropriate solutions.
  • Connect clients with pro bono service providers in order to receive free advice and support.

  • Establish and manage relationships with pro bono professional service providers, including lawyers, financial planners and HR/recruitment professionals across the country, to ensure engagement in the service and the provision of high-quality support to clients.

  • Establish relationships with referring healthcare professionals to increase referrer education and awareness of the services available to ensure high quality and appropriate referrals.
  • Oversee a cohort of law student or other volunteers who support the delivery of the services, including leading on day-to-day supervision and workflow management, and supporting the Team Leader, Legal & Financial Referral Services with volunteer recruitment, training and onboarding, and ongoing learning and development.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Practical Support Services and Team Leader, Legal & Financial Referral Services contribute to projects and evaluations that improve the delivery and impact of the service.
  • Assist with promotional requests for the service including presenting to internal or external stakeholders.

About you,

Essential:

  • A tertiary qualification in law or relevant field.
  • One to two years' experience coordinating pro bono or support services or other legal-related experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills.
  • Skills and experience in communicating with vulnerable clients.
  • Capacity to take initiative, problem solve and manage competing priorities.
  • Demonstrated relationship management skills and ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders (both internally and externally).
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.

Desirable:

  • Experience in not-for-profit or pro bono sector.
  • Basic knowledge of or interest in oncology, cancer services and the needs of persons affected by cancer

About the benefits:

  • Generous salary packaging options that can increase your take home pay by paying certain expenses using pre-tax dollars up to $15,900 a year.
  • Recognised for Voice Project's 2021 and 2023 "Best Workplace" Award as well as Xref "Best Workplace" in 2025.
  • A balanced organisational approach to WFH and office.
  • Work for purpose and know that your work fosters an engaged, diverse, and culturally aware organisation.
  • Discounts available for everyday expenses such as private health, retail, and fitness.
  • CCNSW is an inclusive place to volunteer and work. We embrace diversity, celebrate our differences, and inspire each person to be their authentic self at work.
