People & Culture Manager

Looking to join a growing startup on a mission to change drinking culture?
We're hiring our first People & Culture Manager
About Heaps Normal
We're normalising mindful drinking by brewing beer that tastes so good, you won't miss the alcohol. We're not here to talk about being sober or hold that up as the end goal. Whether you're taking a night off or ditching the booze for life, we reckon it's time to talk about something more interesting. Whether that's having a good time, a good chat and a good drink. We're the weirdos redefining normal for the better and celebrating people who do the same.
Heaps Normal is an independent, non-alcoholic Australian beer company, brewing real beer without the hangover. As a B Corp certified business, we're proud to be part of a global community using business as a force for good.
Our values
Shout the first round: Give first and be a good human. We don't wait to be asked. We go out of our way to do what's right for our team, our community and our environment.
Return the empties: We never walk past a problem. Whether it's a spot fire or a raging inferno, we run towards the fire.
Build each other up: We look after ourselves and look out for our mates. This means investing in people, always putting family first and elevating those we interact with.
Question normal: Walk a mile in their shoes and try to see things from an alternative point of view. Your normal may not be my normal, and normal today may not be normal tomorrow.
About the role
This is a newly created People & Culture Manager role, our first dedicated position in the P&C space, designed to shape and support the full employee lifecycle at Heaps Normal. As we grow, we want to continue building a workplace culture that's inclusive, values-driven and genuinely fun to be part of.
Reporting to our COO, you'll work closely with the broader leadership team to design and deliver people programs, systems and experiences that help our team thrive. You'll also play a key role in helping our team live our values day-to-day, while building out the foundational processes and policies that support our next stage of growth. This is a part-time role (FTE 0.6) and based out of our HQ in Marrickville, NSW / Eora with flexibility for hybrid work.
The responsibilities
- Develop and implement our people strategy, aligned with Heaps Normal's values and growth ambitions
- Own and continuously improve the employee experience, from onboarding and engagement to performance, development and recognition
- Lead culture and wellbeing initiatives that support team connection, safety and belonging across both remote and hybrid environments
- Build and embed key people systems, policies and processes that are practical, scalable and values-aligned
- Partner with our leadership on recruitment, workforce planning and team development
- Be the go-to for all things people-related - offering thoughtful, practical guidance to support team members and people managers alike
- Collaborate on internal comms, employee events and culture-building rituals
- Oversee compliance and risk in areas like workplace safety, employee relations and respectful workplace practices
- Help set up scalable processes that support growth without losing what makes us special
About you
You're someone who gets energy from helping people grow and creating environments where teams can do their best work. You're people-minded, practical and purpose-driven, with the right mix of empathy and action.
- 4–6+ years of experience in a People & Culture role, ideally in a growing business or startup
- Experience across the full employee lifecycle - from onboarding to performance, development and offboarding
- Proven ability to design and embed policies, processes and culture programs that are scalable, inclusive and values-aligned
- Comfortable working autonomously, with the confidence to advise and coach stakeholders at all levels
- Strong knowledge of Australian employment legislation, Fair Work and best practice compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills - you know how to make things feel human and clear
- You care deeply about inclusion and equity, and you bring that lens to everything you do
- Bonus: Experience supporting teams across multiple geographies, or working through international expansion, is a big plus
- Extra bonus if you've used HRIS systems (like Employment Hero or Gusto), Notion, Culture Amp or Slack - nice to have but not essential.
Why you should join Heaps Normal
- One week of life leave to give you that added flexibility to live your best life.
- Annual professional development and wellbeing budget to ensure you have the support you need to level up.
- Access to mental wellbeing services for you and your family through our Employee Assistance Program provider, Unmind.
- Inclusive parental leave policy which supports all types of families. Includes paid leave for both primary and secondary carers and return to work assistance to match your personal needs.
- Know that you're contributing to a positive impact. We donate 2% of our revenue to charitable organisations with a shared purpose.
- Paid volunteer time off and matched giving to empower you to give back to your local community.
- Annual offsites and regular social events to keep you connected with your teammates, wherever you're located.
- Last but not least - unlimited access to the good stuff. Enough Heaps Normal to keep your personal fridge stocked, year round.
Feel like you don't tick every box?
If your experience doesn't perfectly match every bullet point but you're excited about our mission and think you'd thrive here, we'd still love to hear from you. We're an equal opportunities employer with an ongoing commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. If you have any support or access requirements, let us know at the time of your application and we'll be happy to assist you through the recruitment process.
For any further assistance, please email
