The Role

ABC Northwest Queensland, based in Mount Isa, is looking for an ambitious and self-motivated reporter to work with our friendly, fun and experienced team of content makers.

The bureau covers a large region from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the outback towns of Julia Creek, Cloncurry, Normanton, Hughenden and Doomadgee.  Reporters are encouraged to travel across the region to connect with our communities and elevate their stories to a broad audience.  Each day brings a broad range of news topics from mining, agriculture and tourism to economic and environmental issues, natural disasters as well as youth crime and courts.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a passionate storyteller to work in one of the most unique regions of Australia where you will be able to tell compelling stories for national, state and local audiences.

Under the direction of the Editor, ABC North West Queensland, you will create online stories, engaging videos for broadcast and digital platforms, audio news and packages for live radio and on demand, and have the opportunity to share the stories of local people and the community.

The role will involve:

• Creating accurate, concise and clear digital, audio and video news content.
• Delivering news content across multiple online platforms.
• Delivering original stories with impact, to achieve strong reach and engagement with audiences. 
• Contributing to the implementation of the Local Emergency Coverage plan.

About You

You are a highly motivated reporter with a strong knowledge of local and national news issues. Your skills and experience include:

• Creative storytelling ability across audio, video and digital
• Sound editorial skills and judgment.
• Strong understanding of the issues that affect and interest the diverse local audience.
