Primary objective

The Aboriginal Liaison Officer contributes to the provision of culturally appropriate health service provision to Aboriginal

patients and their families at the Alice Springs Hospital. This includes providing a relevant language service, cultural

brokerage, advocacy and support to Aboriginal patients and education and advice to our staff.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide a cultural brokerage service to Aboriginal patients and their families to enable them to engage in health care

decision making.

2. Provide a language service for identified Aboriginal patients and their families and staff.

  1. Provide advice to health service providers on cultural factors influencing patient engagement and decision making.

  2. Assist in the training for hospital staff on communication and cross-cultural issues, appropriate in management and

decision making, with staff and Aboriginal patients and families.

5. Attend team meetings, training activities and supervision, contribute ideas and work collectively on team projects, and

participate in all activities the team engages in.

6. Work within a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse team to ensure provision of a culturally appropriate service.

7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being

undertaken in order to ensure high-quality, safe services and workplaces.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Identify as an Aboriginal person and being accepted as such by the Community in which you live or formerly lived.

2. Experience working as a cultural liaison person between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.

3. Good verbal and written communication skills

  1. The ability to work across diverse cultures in the workplace.
  2. Understanding of cross-cultural issues within the health service.
  3. Ability to organise own workload to ensure tasks are completed within designated time frames.
  4. Willingness to work towards developing identified own learning needs and to complete training.

  5. Follow service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures.

Desirable

1. Ability to speak and understand a local language from the Barkly and Central Australian region of the NT.

2. Qualification in Interpreting or ability undertake training to gain.

3. Qualification and or the understanding of Medical Terminology or ability to gain.
