Company Description
AED Legal Centre is a specialist Community Legal Service operating throughout the state of Victoria.
The centre provides information, education, advice, and legal representation to people with disability who experience discrimination in the areas of education or employment as well as representation to people seeking review of decisions about their NDIS plans.
Our main objective is to defend the human rights of people with a disability in education or employment and give them access to the justice system through a combination of individual, legal and systemic advocacy.
The centre is a member of the Federation of Community Legal Centres of Victoria and is accredited by the National Association of Community Legal Centres (NACLCs).
AED Legal Centre is part of the National Disability Advocacy Program (NDAP) and is mainly funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Social Services.
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role for a Lawyer specializing in Disability Discrimination, based in Melbourne CBD. The Lawyer will be responsible for providing legal advice, advocacy, and representation to clients facing disability discrimination. Daily tasks include conducting legal research, drafting legal documents, and representing clients in hearings and tribunals. The role also involves contributing to policy development and community education programs.
Qualifications
- You must be admitted to practice in Australia with at least 2 years (lawyer position) of post-graduation legal experience in Australia.
- Experience in legal research, drafting legal documents, and representation in hearings
- Strong advocacy and negotiation skills
- A strong interest or experience with disability discrimination law is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage a diverse caseload
- Experience working in a Community Legal Centre or similar environment is a plus
