About the Role

This well-regarded Melbourne-based commercial law firm is seeking an experienced employment and workplace relations lawyer. You will head up its Employment offering in a standalone role. You will advise a diverse client base across industries including professional services, construction, healthcare, education, retail, and more.

This is an opportunity for a senior lawyer who enjoys building client relationships, and providing clear, commercial solutions to complex workplace issues. You will be someone who enjoys working autonomously, though you will have plenty of support from the partnership and the wider team, to get your job done.

The Opportunity

You will play a lead role in advising and managing a wide range of matters, including:

  • Unfair dismissal, general protections, and discrimination claims
  • Advocacy in the Fair Work Commission and other jurisdictions
  • Executive employment, restraint clauses, and termination strategies
  • Workplace investigations, bullying, harassment, and misconduct matters
  • Enterprise bargaining and union disputes
  • Employment litigation and risk mitigation
  • Employment contracts, award interpretation, and HR compliance
  • Restructures, redundancies, mergers, and due diligence
  • Policy development, workplace training, and strategic advice for leadership teams

Once settled in, you'll also contribute to the broader direction of the practice, through mentoring, client relationship management, and business development.

About You

  • Ability to work autonomously on existing matters
  • No expectation to bring a practice - a steady flow of quality work and an established client base ready for you to step into
  • 7+ years' post-admission experience in employment and workplace relations law
  • Strong experience advising employers on complex matters
  • A commercial thinker who can translate legal advice into practical solutions
  • Excellent drafting, advocacy, and communication skills
  • Interest in mentoring junior lawyers and contributing to team development
