About Red Shed
Red Shed is a world-class rowing and wellness facility with a mission to enable Rowing for All, Inspire Wellness and Foster Community. We believe rowing is more than just a sport; it's a powerful agent of positive transformation for our community.
In addition to rowing programs for all ages and abilities, we offer a public gym, group exercise classes, a state-of-the-art recovery and wellness hub, and a range of community activities. As part of our not-for-profit mission, Red Shed also features an on-site café and a lakeside multifunction space for events.
Our vision is to build a vibrant community where everyone can discover their potential, enjoy the sport of rowing, and build meaningful connections. Our team is driven by the values of
Community, Commitment, Opportunity,
and
Fun
.
About the Role
We're seeking a strategic and hands-on General Manager to lead the next phase of Red Shed's growth.
This is a unique opportunity to take the reins of a purpose-driven organisation that has quickly become a hub for rowing, fitness, wellness, and community activity in Canberra.
The role has become available as our current GM steps into a broader group role due to maternity leave - meaning this is an
ongoing leadership position, not just a short-term contract.
As General Manager, you'll report to the Board and hold full responsibility for Red Shed's operations and P&L. You'll balance strategic leadership with on-the-ground involvement, ensuring that both the big picture and daily details are delivered to the highest standard. Your Direct Reports will include our Head of Rowing, Head of Gym, Operations Officer and Administration Team, Event Officer and Partnering Organisations.
This is a broad, varied role — one day you might be across financial performance and stakeholder relationships, the next you're working with the team hands on to deliver rowing programs, gym and wellness experiences, events, or café operations. It's an ideal role for a leader who is as comfortable shaping strategy as they are rolling up their sleeves.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead Red Shed's strategic direction, financial performance, and reporting to the Board.
- Manage and support a multi-disciplinary team across rowing, gym, wellness, events, and hospitality.
- Oversee budgets, P&L, compliance, and governance obligations.
- Build strong partnerships with community, sporting, and government stakeholders.
- Drive membership growth, program participation, and community engagement.
- Foster a positive, values-driven culture that empowers staff and volunteers.
- Ensure smooth day-to-day operations while keeping focus on long-term sustainability and growth.
Qualifications & Skills
- Senior management experience, ideally in sport, community, fitness, or a related sector.
- Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets and reporting at Board/Committee level.
- A proven ability to lead and inspire diverse teams.
- Hands-on approach and willingness to engage in day-to-day operational needs.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship-building skills.
- A passion for health, wellness, and community-focused work.
Why Join Us?
- Lead a flagship not-for-profit organisation with a big vision.
- Shape the future of rowing, fitness, and wellness in Canberra.
- Be part of a passionate team and supportive community.
- Work in a stunning lakeside location with state-of-the-art facilities.
- Opportunity to make a lasting impact through sport, wellness, and community connection.
Apply today to be part of Red Shed's next chapter.
