This role will assist Council to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities' in the preservation and celebration of their cultures, through collaboration and engagement as well as play a part in supporting the Mara Ngali Agreement between Tamworth Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (TACCO) and Tamworth Regional Council (TRC).

This landmark partnership champions place-based solutions that actively address systemic inequalities and empower self-determination. It represents a shared commitment to embedding and actioning the priorities of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap through meaningful local initiatives.

We are seeking a proud member of the Aboriginal community with strong community connections and kinship ties to assist Council in supporting the local Aboriginal community and play a key internal role in building cultural awareness and understanding among Council staff. This includes contributing to cultural capability initiatives, providing guidance on culturally safe practices, and fostering a more inclusive and respectful workplace that recognises and values Aboriginal perspectives and knowledge.

The ideal candidate will hold a strong profile, reputation, and networks within the local community including both individuals and organisations and possess the ability to effectively engage and communicate with those stakeholders.

The Aboriginal Liaison Officer will work with Council to:

  • Lead and support the organisation in the promotion and embedding of Aboriginal cultural awareness and inclusion across all areas of Council;
  • Provide specialised advice to all areas of Council to enhance and promote cultural safety and inclusiveness
  • Support and encourage the organisation in taking meaningful action to advance reconciliation through the implementation, reporting and evaluation of the Tamworth Regional Council Reconciliation Action Plan.
  • Guide and mentor Aboriginal employees across the organisation to assist them to build their capability and achieve their potential, including implementing a mentor support program
  • Build and strengthen the relationships between Council and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and communities

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL NEED

  • Applicants must identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent through parentage, identify as being an Australian Aboriginal and accepted in the community as such*;
  • A Degree in Social Policy, Community Development, Social Sciences, Community Services or relevant equivalent experience;
  • Driver Licence

Applicants will be required to provide confirmation of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent with their application. This confirmation can be in the form of:

  • A letter of confirmation from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community organisation, or
  • A statutory declaration confirming:
    1. You are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent;
    2. You identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person; and
    3. You are accepted as such by your community

Salary range: Grade 15 - $88, $96,191.20 per annum plus superannuation for a 35 hour work week. Salary may be negotiated based on skills, experience and your value to our organisation.
