Why your role matters
The Stats Central facility is part of the highly successful Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre (MWAC), a multidisciplinary instrumental core facility base at the Kensington Campus of UNSW Sydney supporting researchers in all areas. Stats Central is a team of statistical consultants offering UNSW researchers support and training in study design and data analysis. Various services include general statistical consultation and research design advice, open seminars and short courses on statistical analysis, grant proposal reviews and contracted support for in-depth collaboration.
The Bioinformatician will contribute to expanding Stats Central's support for bioinformatics. The role will build the capacity of UNSW researchers and research students to process and analyse complex genomic and proteomic datasets by advising on or leading study design, analysis and communication of results; developing and maintaining analysis pipelines; developing and running regular professional development workshops and seminars; and building and maintaining strong relationships to facilitate interdisciplinary research.
The role of Bioinformatician reports to the Senior Statistical Consultant, Stats Central and has no direct reports.

About you
Level A
You have a PhD in Bioinformatics or a related field, along with proven expertise in applying bioinformatic pipelines for single-cell sequencing, spatial proteomics/transcriptomics, and or integrative multi-omics data analysis. You'll be able to demonstrate strong proficiency in R or Python, bash, and Linux HPC environments, and ability to meet project requirements with minimal supervision.
You're an effective team player, capable of independent decision-making, and skilled in building collaborative relationships with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including the ability to communicate complex bioinformatic concepts to non-specialists. The role also involves mentoring staff and students, developing new bioinformatic methodologies, and leveraging generative AI to analyse complex datasets.
You can also demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives, values, policies, and guidelines, along with a strong awareness of health and safety responsibilities and a willingness to undertake relevant training.
Level B (in addition to Level A criteria above)
Additionally, you have proven experience in bioinformatics, including reviewing research grants and journal articles, and leading the planning and analysis of genomics or proteomics studies. You can also demonstrate independent scientific and bioinformatic leadership, with the ability to critically evaluate research proposals, and effectively teach bioinformatic techniques, and develop materials for short course settings. A strong interdisciplinary publication record, particularly in bioinformatic methodology journals, along with well-developed interpersonal and organisational skills, is also essential.
