The Queensland Council for LGBTI Health (QC), and 2Spirits are united in a statewide mission to enhance the health and wellbeing of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Sistergirl, and Brotherboy people and communities across Queensland.

Since its formation in 1984, QC has been dedicated to delivering peer-led, community-based health services and health promotion initiatives, benefiting from funding from Local, State, and Commonwealth Governments, as well as the invaluable support of volunteers, donors, and broader community members.

2Spirits, since 1996, has been committed to cultivating pathways that foster partnership with agencies and community organisations, with a focus on the health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy people.

Together, QC and 2Spirits work to create safe, culturally appropriate, and accessible environments, free from discrimination and stigma, where individuals can make informed health, wellbeing, and lifestyle choices. This partnership is responsive to critical issues such as health, wellbeing, HIV/AIDS, people living with HIV (PLHIV), alcohol and other drugs, as well as youth and ageing within our LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

Position Summary:

As an integral part of Gayawur Rainbow: Affirming Care for LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy Well Beings, the Intake/Drop-In Worker plays a pivotal role in providing comprehensive support and navigating social determinants of health for LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities across Queensland. This role involves managing intake processes and delivering support within both drop-in spaces and through the phone line, combining the strengths of both modes to address holistic well-being needs. The Intake/Drop-In Worker will ensure that every individual receives respectful, affirming care, while also connecting them with resources that address broader social determinants affecting their health.

Genuine occupational requirement

To perform this role, it is essential that the person is a member of LGBTIQA+ Communities. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

Through this role, the person will perform duties that benefit the members of a group of people with an attribute whose welfare the act was designed if the purpose of the act is not inconsistent with the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Heroic Support and Intake:

  • Provide Initial Contact: Serve as the initial point of contact for individuals reaching out via phone, online platforms, or in-person drop-in spaces, offering a warm, affirming, and respectful welcome.
  • Conduct Intake:Perform thorough and compassionate intake assessments, gathering essential information while ensuring each individual's experience and identity are honoured and respected.

2. Affirming and Respectful Interaction:

  • Create Safe Spaces:Establish and maintain safe, non-judgmental environments where individuals can freely express their needs and concerns.
  • Respect Diversity: Approach each interaction with a deep understanding of and respect for the diverse experiences and identities within the LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities.

3. Holistic Support and Navigation:

  • Provide Support:Offer immediate assistance and guidance, helping individuals navigate the services and resources available through Gayawur Rainbow and external partners.
  • Empower Individuals:Support individuals in articulating their needs and preferences, ensuring they have the information and resources necessary to make informed decisions.

4. Collaboration and Teamwork:

  • Work with Peers:Collaborate closely with other Intake/Drop-In Workers and the broader team to ensure consistent and coordinated support across all sites and platforms.
  • Share Insights:Provide feedback and insights on common themes, challenges, and successes to contribute to continuous improvement in service delivery.

5. Professional Development and Self-Care:

  • Ongoing Learning: Engage in regular training and development to stay informed about best practices in intake processes, social determinants of health, and LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy support.
  • Maintain Resistance: Practice self-care and resilience/resistance strategies to sustain effective support for clients while managing personal well-being.

6. Advocacy and Representation:

  • Champion Needs: Advocate for the needs and rights of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy individuals within the context of social determinants of health, ensuring their voices are heard and represented.
  • Promote Awareness: Represent Gayawur Rainbow at community events and outreach activities, raising awareness about available services and support.

Key Selection Criteria:

Essential:

  1. Experience and Skills:

  2. Proven experience in intake, support work, or related roles, with a strong track record of providing compassionate, affirming assistance to diverse populations.

  3. Cultural Competence:

  4. In-depth understanding of LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities, including First Nations cultural practices, and the social determinants of health impacting these communities.

  5. Empathy and Respect:

  6. Exceptional ability to engage with individuals in a respectful and empathetic manner, acknowledging and valuing their unique experiences and identities.

  7. Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  8. Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with individuals from various backgrounds and facilitate their connection to necessary resources.

  9. Resource Navigation:

  10. Experience in connecting individuals with resources related to social determinants of health, including housing, financial support, and legal assistance.

  11. Team Collaboration:

  12. Ability to work collaboratively with team members from both QC and 2Spirits, sharing insights and contributing to a unified approach.

  13. Peer Lived Experience

  14. Understands and can articulate the Lived and Living Experience of a member of our LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities in Queensland.

Desirable:

  1. Relevant Qualifications:

  2. Formal qualifications in social work, community services, or a related field orExperience in a role that is equivalent to the attainment of these qualifications.

2. Knowledge of Queensland Services:

  • Familiarity with the social and health service landscape in Queensland, including resources available to LGBTIQA+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy.
