AFL Cape York's (AFLCY's) mission is to strengthen resilience, provide positive life experience and opportunities to Indigenous Australians through culturally appropriate education, sporting and wellbeing pathways. We operate two residential boarding facilities in Cairns – AFL Cape York House for Boys (in Portsmith) and AFL Cape York House for Girls (in Redlynch) – providing a safe and supportive 'home away from home' environment for secondary school students from remote communities.

ABOUT THE ROLE     We have an exciting opportunity for a Full-time Boarding Coordinator at AFL Cape York House for Girls who has a passion for working with Indigenous young people in a diverse environment.

Working alongside the Boarding Manager, Residential Boarding staff, Wellbeing and pathway staff and external services to:

  • Coordinate a boarding program and work collaboratively with AFLCY team members and external parties which holistically supports our young people in their transition through secondary school through to independence following secondary school.
  • In collaboration with key staff, liaise on appropriate behavioural management strategies to promote positive behaviour of students and enhance student wellbeing.
  • Assist employees in understanding and implementing the Behaviour Management Framework in line with Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Framework.
  • Assist in the day-to-day operations of boarding, facilities and assets maintenance program as well as on call support including planning, coordination, implementation and administration.
  • Assist the Boarding Manager to implement a roster system of boarding employees, set priorities and monitor employee workflow to ensure the boarding house meets operational and statutory requirements
  • Assist with residential boarding supervisor duties and shifts as required.

CORE COMPETENCIES

Experience, Skills & Knowledge

  • Trauma informed practice management experience and extensive behaviour management experience.
  • High level time management and organisational skills, particularly in relation to managing multiple priorities, tasks and adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Cultural competence; proven skills, knowledge and behaviours that are required to plan, support, improve and deliver services in a culturally respectful and appropriate manner for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and supervise teams in achieving positive and sustainable outcomes through previous leadership experience.
  • High level written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with young people.
  • High level computer skills.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Certificate IV in Community Services/Social Work/ Youth Work etc or 3-5 years in a similar role
  • Positive Working with Children Blue Card (or eligible to apply for)
  • First Aid Certificate (including CPR)
  • MR class driver's licence
  • National Police Clearance
  • Bronze Medallion (or ability to obtain)

It is a requirement of this position to live onsite at our Girls House Facility (separate private 3-bedroom residence provided).
