About the Service
Centrecare in partnership with Waalitj Foundation, will provide culturally and developmentally appropriate psychosocial, family, peer and other support services to at-risk children, young people and their families who have both mental health challenges and offending behaviours. The overall goal is to reduce the risk of reoffending in the context of mental illness in consultation and collaboration with other service providers, including the Child Adolescent Forensic Service (CAFS).
The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and empathetic Aboriginal Mental Health Worker to support Aboriginal children, young people and their families working with the Child and Adolescent Forensic Service in the community or at Banksia Hill Detention Centre. The successful candidate will provide social, emotional, cultural, and/or mental health support to young people and their families through a case management model.
- Provide social, emotional, cultural, spiritual and/or mental health care to Aboriginal children, young people and their families who are clients of CAFS.
- Provide cultural liaison and family engagement where relevant and provide cultural interpretations to the broader CAFS teams.
- With an intrinsic understanding of Aboriginal cultural beliefs and ways of knowing, help the broader team to be aware of issues facing Aboriginal children and young people and their families.
- Facilitate connections to local Aboriginal organisations and services for Aboriginal CAFS and Youth Detention clients and provides advice to CAFS on Aboriginal cultural and local family issues.
- Support Aboriginal children, young people and their families/carers to encourage and facilitate access to appropriate mental health and other services and provide education on the benefits of ongoing treatment and engagement in mental health and other programs.
- Work within a multidisciplinary environment to contribute to and enhance the provision of mental health assessments and relevant interventions
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case notes, documentation, and reports in compliance with organisational policies and requirements.
Selection Criteria
- Certificate IV, Diploma or Bachelor in Mental Health or progression to formal qualifications in Mental Health.
- Aboriginality is a genuine role requirement
- Demonstrated experience working with addiction or mental health with young people.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in a similar position.
- Must have the ability to work full-time
