Six Degrees is recruiting for an experienced Principal Financial Accountant to join a corporate financial accounting function within a large QLD Government Department. The role sits within a central finance team responsible for statutory reporting, compliance and audit coordination.

The position provides technical accounting leadership, supports monthly and annual reporting obligations and contributes to continuous improvement across financial accounting processes and controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the preparation and delivery of high-quality statutory financial statements in line with Australian Accounting Standards and applicable government financial reporting requirements.
  • Coordinate and support external audit processes, including planning, interim and end of year activities.
  • Deliver accurate and timely financial reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Monitor compliance with financial legislation, policies and procedures and provide expert advice on emerging accounting standards and regulatory changes.
  • Prepare and review month-end journals, reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Interpret new accounting guidance and provide technical advice, position papers and formal responses to senior management as required.
  • Prepare clear, concise and well-supported financial reports and briefings.
  • Provide training and guidance to business areas to strengthen financial accounting capability and compliance.
  • Support the day to day operations of the financial accounting team and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to projects and ad hoc activities aligned to broader corporate finance objectives.
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures and guidelines that promote sound financial reporting practices.
  • Promote ethical behaviour, professional standards and ongoing skills development within the team.

Essential Skills:

  • Extensive experience in financial accounting within a complex organisational environment.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing annual statutory financial statements.
  • Strong capability in preparing reconciliations, movement schedules and supporting disclosures.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and public sector financial reporting requirements.

Desirable Skills:

  • Tertiary qualifications in accounting and membership with a recognised professional accounting body.
  • Experience within a government financial reporting environment.

Highly Regarded:

  • Professional accounting qualification (CPA, CA, or IPA).
  • Experience in public sector or government financial reporting environments.
