Austroads is the association of Australian and New Zealand transport agencies. They deliver authoritative, practical, and impartial advice, tools, and services to support safe, efficient and reliable mobility across Australia and New Zealand.
Their work includes managing NEVDIS (the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System), Transport Certification Australia, and establishing the National Digital Trust Service to enable secure, interoperable digital driver licences.

The Role
As Legal Counsel, you will work with a supportive General Counsel in providing high-quality legal advice across Austroads. You'll draft, negotiate, and review contracts, advise on regulatory issues, and help manage legal risk while enabling effective partnerships with government, industry, and suppliers.
This role requires strong contract drafting experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to balance competing priorities in a complex, dynamic environment.
*Key Responsibilities*
- Draft, negotiate, and advise on agreements with suppliers, government agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Provide timely, clear, solution-focused legal advice to internal teams.
- Advise on data privacy, intellectual property, government policy, competition and consumer law.
- Assist with maintaining legal precedents and uplift legal capability across the business.
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including external counsel where required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and legal education initiatives.
- Support the delivery of government policy initiatives linked to Austroads' work.
About You
You are a proactive and commercially minded legal professional who can balance detail with practical solutions. You bring:
- Admission as a legal practitioner in Victoria with at least 3 years' post-qualification experience.
- Strong track record in drafting and negotiating a variety of contracts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in government, privacy, data, or intellectual property law (highly regarded).
- In-house legal experience, including secondments, with proven stakeholder management skills will also be highly regarded.
