Build, Lead, Elevate
At Safewill, we're setting a new benchmark for modern software in the end-of-life space. As a Lead Engineer, you'll drive both delivery and technical excellence across a cross-functional squad - guiding system architecture, mentoring engineers, and ensuring we ship high-quality software at pace.
You'll sit at the heart of product delivery and engineering quality, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the solutions we build are scalable, secure, and fast. If you're passionate about leading by example, lifting up those around you, and applying world-class standards to how we build - this is your seat at the table.
What You'll Lead
Technical Direction
- Own and shape architectural decisions across your team and influence technical approaches across the broader engineering org
- Ensure scalable, maintainable solutions through clear design, smart tooling, and reusable components
- Champion adoption of AI-assisted workflows, automated testing, and observability tools
Delivery
- Support your team in sprint planning, estimation, and execution
- Proactively identify and resolve technical blockers, delivery risks, or under-scoped features
- Ensure releases are predictable, secure, and well-documented
Mentorship & Capability Uplift
- Coach and mentor 2–3 engineers with regular feedback and growth-focused support
- Build a team that writes clean, secure code and levels up from every PR review
- Create internal successors by growing technical and leadership skills in others
Cross-functional Impact
- Partner closely with Product, Design, and other squads to align technical delivery with business value
- Represent engineering in roadmap planning and squad ceremonies
- Drive influence through credibility, insight, and clear technical communication
What You Bring
You've been a senior or staff-level engineer who naturally leads technical work and brings clarity to complexity. You're known for pairing strong execution with generosity - sharing knowledge, lifting others, and thinking beyond your code. Additionally, you have:
- Deep experience delivering software in agile, cross-functional teams
- Proven technical leadership in high-performing squads
- Strong system design and architectural instincts - especially in distributed systems, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure
- Excellent collaboration and mentoring skills
- Fluency in TypeScript or a similar modern language, and experience across backend, frontend, and infra
- Ability to unblock delivery with speed and clarity
Bonus points for
- Experience working with Kubernetes, Docker, Cloud Run, or GCP
- Familiarity with GraphQL, event-driven systems, security best practices, and observability tooling
- Passion for emerging technologies, AI-enhanced workflows, and innovation in engineering process
Why Safewill, why now?
We're rewriting how Australians deal with death - simplifying wills, and end-of-life services through beautifully simple tech. How we do that though is incredibly complex. If you want to work for a scaling company that operates in a high-trust domain and be part of solving intricate, challenging problems that will touch every Australian at some point in their lives, then we think you should apply. You're exactly the type of engineer we need on the team
