About the Opportunity
The Centre for Accelerator Science (CAS) at ANSTO has a vacancy for an inquisitive and self-motivated person to join our team. The CAS Science group is responsible for supporting user research projects and new developments utilising the scientific capabilities of ANSTO's ion beam accelerators. With this position, CAS is undertaking research and development to enhance our capability to support nuclear safeguards. For this purpose, we apply Accelerator Mass Spectrometry for detection of long-lived radioisotopes of the actinides. Specifically, we will develop techniques that enable age dating of nuclear materials for nuclear safeguards.
About You
In this role, you will work closely with other scientists and laboratory technical staff in CAS to deliver successful capability-focussed research and development. You will use your research expertise to plan and deliver experiments aimed at delivering new and enhanced capabilities based on accelerator mass spectrometry. You will become an expert in preparing samples in our laboratories and operating our accelerator facilities to perform analyses. You will use your initiative and scientific knowledge to optimise analytical procedures to establish and validate new analytical capabilities.

Your Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, plan and undertake method development to implement new methods or to improve existing methods to meet international best practice and support emerging applications in nuclear safeguards, with advice from expert users and CAS senior scientists.
- Develop knowledge and experience of current best practice in CAS accelerator mass spectrometry techniques; develop expertise in applications of accelerator techniques to enable provision of scientific advice to CAS users.
- Maintain and develop individual learning and knowledge currency in the application of AMS to nuclear safeguards and nuclear monitoring.
- Work to established laboratory procedures and assist with development of new and improved procedures.
