Launceston General Hospital Intensive Care Unit:
The Launceston General Hospital (LGH) has a purpose-built Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with 11 fully staffed beds (expandable to 13). We are the major referral centre for North and North West Tasmania. This position is approved by the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM) for the Transition Year of CICM training.
The ICU Transition Year Fellow position is a leadership role within the LGH ICU. The Transition Year Fellow position provides the opportunity for the successful candidate to develop both clinical and non-clinical skills essential for an ICU Consultant, whilst being supported and mentored by experienced Intensive Care Specialists. Based on a 38‑hour work week (5 x 7.6-hour days Monday-Friday each week) with 80% clinical and 20% (7.6hr/week) dedicated to non-clinical activities.
It is expected that the Fellow prior to starting would negotiate with the Unit a focus for their Transition Year from above or one of the following (not an exhaustive list):
- Gaining formal echocardiography qualifications, such as the Diploma of Diagnostic Ultrasound.
- Gaining formal Medical Education qualifications
- Fellowship in Medical Simulation
- Gaining advanced vascular access skills

Please note candidates with the following CICM Essential Requirements will be highly regarded
- Satisfactory completion of the required clinical training time and assessments for the core training intensive care medicine, anaesthesia and medicine years
- Satisfactory completion of the Second Part Examination
- Satisfactory completion of all prescribed courses, learning packages and WBA.
- Submission of a Formal Project in the format prescribed in the guideline
- Satisfactory exposure to two out of the three sub-specialities in:
- Cardiothoracic surgery intensive care
- Neurological / Neurosurgery intensive care
- Trauma intensive care

Details of Appointment
Fixed term, full time, shift worker (fully rotational) position working 76 hours, commencing from 2 February 2026 until 31 January 2027.
You will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight, pro rata.

Salary:
Registrars
Medical Practitioner Level $134,930 - $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging
- Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022
In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available
