About UNSW:UNSW isn't like other places you've worked. Yes, we're a large organisation with a diverse and talented community; a community doing extraordinary things. Together, we are driven to be thoughtful, practical, and purposeful in all we do. Taking this combined approach is what makes our work matter. If you want a career where you can thrive, be challenged and do meaningful work, you're in the right place.

This role is based in the UNSW Division of Societal Impact, Equity and Engagement (SIEE) which leads UNSW's efforts to make a positive and lasting impact on society, promoting equity and social justice, and driving engagement activities which enhance UNSW's reputation as a key contributor to society through its research, teaching, and community engagement

Why your role matters:As an Engagement Officer you will be building positive relationships with key education contacts to communicate the value and purpose of our outreach programs. Your work will ensure effective engagement with students in schools, TAFE and other groups such as veterans and refugees- often reached through community organisations and Not for Profits.

This role works collaboratively with the Students as Partners and Learning Experiences work areas to provide valuable mentorship to the University Ambassadors (current students of UNSW) who deliver the in-school workshop content as designed by our Student Equity team. You'll facilitate valuable training and guidance for these Ambassadors, many of whom have experienced our pathway programs firsthand, helping them grow in confidence and continuously improve their workshop delivery.

To find out more about our student equity initiatives, you can visit:

This role reports to the Engagement lead and has no direct reports but does offer ongoing mentorship and supervision to the University Ambassadors engaged in the program.

More about the role:In this role, you'll be managing relationships with 25 to 30 schools in metropolitan Sydney as well as a regional NSW school portfolio.  The successful person will be providing scheduling, coordination, and communication with the schools to meet necessary ongoing deadlines and key performance indicators of the different programs. Because of the nature of the role, there will be regular travelling involved (there will be minimal use of your own car – we use GoGet rentals).

Whilst the role does not involve direct teaching or facilitation of workshops in front of students – this is done by our UNSW ambassadors; you will be assessing the progress and delivery of those ambassadors.

In addition, you will also participate in the development of action research and program evaluation and support the collation of data and reporting.

Who You Are:We are looking for someone who is passionate about education equity, who is aligned with UNSW's vision and comes with:

  • Experience within the school system, ideally. This role could suit a schoolteacher or a school careers counsellor with excellent project management and coordination skills. Applicants from the Tertiary and Community/NGO sectors also encouraged to apply
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Australian school and University systems and contextual issues for schools and students from low SES backgrounds
  • Excellent stakeholder management and written and verbal communication skills to ensure positive student and school engagement in the program
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with a wide variety of people
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan, schedule and manage projects within set timeframes and allocated resources
  • Demonstrated high level organisational administrative skills and high attention to details
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, solve problems and contribute to the development of evidence- informed strategies for the work area
  • Previous experience evaluating student's progress would be advantageous, but not essential
  • A full driver's licence and the ability and willingness to work outside of normal working hours and work at locations across Sydney and NSW, with potential travel
  • A valid Work with Children Check

We expect the successful candidate to work three days on campus (or on the road, depending on the activity) with the option to work two days from home. Noting school operating hours.
