CAVAL has partnered with and supported the Australasian library sector through the development and implementation of innovative, high-quality and future thinking services and solutions since 1978.
CAVAL's Language Resources is Australasia's leading library supplier of shelf-ready community language material. We are seeking a Collection Development Officer will work in close collaboration with an experienced team of Collection Development Specialists and Cataloguers to support the literary needs of communities in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand by sourcing and supplying community language material to their local library.
This role includes structured support and training to facilitate career progression. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in professional development activities and will receive mentoring from senior staff.
The core responsibilities of the role are
:
- Material allocation: allocate incoming material to customers based on profiles, language preferences, and collection needs. Chinese material (print books) will be the initial priority
- Cataloguing: learn and apply cataloguing standards (e.g., RDA, MARC21) to create accurate bibliographic records; maintain metadata consistency and quality across catalogued items; work with cataloguing specialists to resolve complex records and improve workflows
- Procurement: select and purchase library materials in line with customer profiles, budgets, and collection development policies under the supervision of the Chinese Collection Development Specialists; stay informed about publishing trends and customer needs to guide acquisitions
Selection Criteria
:
- Demonstrated experience or interest in library services, acquisitions and/or cataloguing
- Ability to read and speak
Chinese - Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively and to work as part of a team
- Ability to engage in manual handling and lifting tasks on a regular daily basis
- Demonstrated interest in supporting culturally and linguistically diverse communities
Essential Physical Demands
:
- Ability to walk and stand as needed
- Ability to lift in full range of motion up to 15 kilograms
- Ability to push/pull trollies
- Ability to grip/grasp library material to perform required tasks
- Ability to bend, squat/kneel, twist/turn, reach above shoulder
- Keyboard and mouse use
