About The Role
The Safety Specialist plays a crucial role in driving a shift in safety culture, performance, and achieving operational excellence by influencing, coaching, supporting and working directly with the Front-Line Leaders, Contracting Partners and the broader workforce.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build effective and meaningful relationships with stakeholders to promote collaboration, coordination and execution of WHS-related activities
- Build capability amongst leaders and their teams, with the objective of achieving the desirable state of an inter-dependent safety culture
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of WHS systems relevant to people, plant and processes
- Embed a culture that approaches challenge with a mature risk management approach, aligned with organisational and legislative requirements
- Facilitate WHS management system orientation and training within relevant business units to support effective implementation and use of WHS-related processes
- Support peers in a team-based environment and undertake other duties as required to deliver optimal WHS outcomes based on operational and organisational needs
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of WHS (and other relevant) legislation and standards to deliver practical and relevant advice to stakeholders
- Coordinate and conduct hazard identification and risk assessment processes within the business where more complex tools are required
- Facilitate and/or participate in Incident Investigation processes where required.
- Facilitate and/or support any regulatory interactions or external evaluation activities, in collaboration with stakeholders where required
Our ideal candidate will have the ability to work in a rapidly changing and dynamic environment with a drive and resourcefulness to recognise, promote and reinforce positive safety behaviour, and support stakeholders articulate pragmatic risk-treatment plans, where required. It is essential that the candidate has the ability to work with people at all levels within the organisation and work autonomously with a structured and risk-based approach.
You will also have the following:
- Tertiary WHS Qualifications or suitable qualifications in relevant discipline (preferable)
- Tertiary qualifications in Workplace Training and Assessment (preferable)
- Strong relationship management skills and the ability to engage and influence stakeholders and build effective, meaningful and sustainable working relationships
- Ability to develop, implement and manage health and safety management systems
- Experience in facilitating incident investigations and risk assessments, including the use of incident and risk operating systems for record keeping purposes
- Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, risk management, auditing, reporting and investigation requirements

SIMEC Iron Ore South Australian operations consists of two primary sites: Iron Baron and the Southern Middleback Ranges, located in proximity to the coastal township of Whyalla. We also have a portfolio of non-ferrous mining assets located in South Australia, including the Ardrossan Dolomite Mine - which supplies dolomite flux to the Whyalla Steelworks.
