The opportunity

We're looking for a Senior Underwriter to join our Builders Warranty team. QBE manages the builders warranty product on behalf of the insurance arms of State Governments in WA, SA & ACT. This product is a statutory insurance product to protect homeowners.

In this role you will be responsible for overseeing the Builder's Warranty insurance, financially assessing and managing risk of residential construction builders according to the underwriting guidelines. The role involves working closely with brokers and clients, combining technical expertise with relationship management.

Your new role

As the Senior Underwriter, you will:

  • Assesses builders' capacity to undertake risk by reviewing financials, experience, and history.
  • Underwrite policies in accordance with organisational standards, monitor underwriting procedures and checklists, and ensure all documentation and signoffs are accurately recorded and compliant.
  • Participate actively to contribute informed insights, share market intelligence, and align with team strategies and best practices.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients and brokers, deliver prompt and professional service, and monitor client needs through structured calls and visits to enhance satisfaction and brand reputation.
  • Provide technical expertise across the full product suite and prepare timely reports to communicate market conditions and underwriting outcomes.
  • Mentor and coach the underwriters to promote consistent underwriting practices and facilitate knowledge transfer to support team capability and alignment with business goals.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Strong skills in risk assessment and financial analysis to evaluate builder eligibility and policy exposure.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Deep technical underwriting knowledge and understand regulatory compliance across different jurisdictions (SA, WA, ACT)
  • Analytical thinking and sound decision-making are essential for managing complex portfolios and recommending strategic actions.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to work effectively with brokers, clients, and internal teams.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems and awareness of market conditions. Ability to work with others in the team and mentor capabilities to support underwriter to promote consistent practices.
