NM Insurance is a market-leading distributor of insurance products and services across the retail recreational sectors of pleasure craft, motorcycle, and caravan, as well as commercial marine insurance lines.

Our business operates through offices located across Australia and New Zealand. We are a full-cycle underwriting agency, providing comprehensive support in underwriting, claims, product development, actuarial analysis, finance, and legal and compliance. Our insurance products are distributed through licensed insurance brokers, distribution partners, and directly to consumers in both the Australian and New Zealand markets.

In this senior role, you will be responsible for underwriting complex commercial marine risks, including hull and liability, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining documentation accuracy, and contributing to product refinement. You will also play a key role in mentoring junior underwriters and collaborating with brokers and internal teams to deliver exceptional service and drive portfolio performance.

Job Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years' insurance underwriting experience, with at least 5 years in Commercial Marine (Hull & Liability)
  • ANZIIF Senior Associate or equivalent industry accreditation (preferred)
  • Tier 1 and RG 146 accreditation, with up-to-date Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Strong technical knowledge of marine liability exposures, hull risk assessment, and contractual clauses
  • Proven ability to operate within delegated underwriting authority and escalate compliance breaches appropriately
  • High attention to detail with a track record of accurate documentation and regulatory compliance
  • Proficiency in insurance systems and digital platforms
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience mentoring junior underwriters and contributing to team capability

Job Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage Commercial Marine risks, including Hull and Liability, within delegated authority
  • Assess new business and renewals across broker portfolios, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Interpret and apply underwriting guidelines, rating directives, and contractual agreements
  • Maintain high standards of documentation and data integrity across systems
  • Provide technical mentoring and support to junior underwriters
  • Collaborate with brokers and internal teams to deliver responsive, high-quality service
  • Monitor market trends and contribute to product development and refinement
  • Ensure full compliance with legal, regulatory, and company policies (e.g. RG 146, Tier 1)
  • Participate in internal audits, risk reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Uphold NM Insurance's values in all interactions and decision-making
