This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.

The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact:

Be part of a passionate, high-performing Aboriginal Child and Family Advocacy and Support (ACFAS) Program where your work truly matters. You'll advocate for families involved or at risk in the child protection system, helping keep them safe, united, and supported. You'll bring your skills, cultural knowledge, and teamwork to a role that's rewarding and dynamic.

Each day, you will expect to:

  • Provide families with clear, high-quality information to help them understand and navigate the child protection system.
  • Support families to focus on their child's safety and wellbeing, including self-advocacy or representing their views when needed.
  • Build positive engagement with families and service providers to ensure family needs are central to support delivery.
  • Assist families in accessing relevant services and attend meetings or court to provide ongoing support.
  • Maintain accurate records and data in line with ALS policies and procedures.
  • Uphold ALS values, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Work Health & Safety standards in all work activities.

Who Are We Looking For?

A motivated and skilled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person who understands the cultural, social, and historical needs of their community. You'll bring experience, respect, and a strong commitment to supporting families and upholding cultural values.

You will be able to demonstrate:

  • Must identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander and be recognised in the community.
  • Strong knowledge and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural and social needs.
  • Minimum Certificate 3 or 4 in Community Services (or similar) with relevant experience in the field. Must have leadership experience to be considered for the senior position.
  • Experience working with children and families in a culturally safe, trauma-informed way.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and computer literacy with ability to adapt in a dynamic environment.
  • Valid NSW driver's licence and willingness to travel; experience in Aboriginal community organisations or legal practice is a plus.

Why Join Us?

At ALS, you can discover a fulfilling career that truly makes an impact in the community. We also offer our staff a range of generous benefits including:

  • Not-for-profit salary packaging to reduce your tax burden, which means you get to keep more of your hard-earned money in your pocket
  • Annual leave loading of 17.5%, ensuring that you are rewarded for your time off and can enjoy a well-deserved break.
  • Career and professional development opportunities

At ALS, we are committed to upholding the highest standards of safe recruitment practices. Therefore, it is essential that candidates either possess or have the capacity to obtain a current and valid Working with Children (NSW) and National Police check for this role.

We are focused to providing equal opportunities to all candidates. If you identify as a person with a disability and need any adjustments or support with your application including throughout the recruitment process, please let us know by reaching out to our Talent Team
