The Corporate Counsel – Regulatory Affairs provides legal advice and guidance on regulatory, compliance, and enforcement matters across Optus, covering telecommunications, consumer law, privacy, and risk management. The role supports a multi-year program to enhance regulatory processes, manage external lawyers as needed, and ensures compliance with laws, industry codes, and critical infrastructure obligations.
In addition, the Counsel works closely with business stakeholders and the Regulatory & Corporate Affairs team to address regulatory advocacy, remediation, and engagement with law enforcement authorities. This role requires staying informed of legal and industry developments, implementing regulatory changes, and balancing strong compliance with a commercial approach in a fast-paced and highly regulated telco environment.
What you'll be doing:
Provision of timely, strategic, and commercially focused legal advice to support regulatory uplift programs, business decision-making, compliance, and customer outcomes.
Provide ongoing legal support and advice on regulatory matters, ensuring compliance with telecommunications laws, industry codes, and emerging digital platform regulations.
Manage regulatory enforcement matters by mitigating legal risks, providing customer-focused advice, overseeing external resources, and ensuring timely reporting to stakeholders.
Manage Optus' responses to regulatory and law enforcement requests while supporting the Group Compliance Program through legal advice, compliance, and proactive risk identification.
Promote legal and regulatory compliance by training and educating Optus teams, and supporting readiness and adherence to new and existing laws.
Support Optus' regulatory position by meeting commitments, monitoring legal developments, and contributing to regulatory strategy through collaboration with Regulatory & Government Affairs.
Enhance legal support efficiency by leveraging the right resources, delivering clear and timely advice, and ensuring a strong customer-first focus.
What makes you perfect for the role?
Qualified Australian solicitor with 5+ years' legal experience, extensive knowledge of regulatory and telecommunications matters, and a law degree.
Experience in telecommunications or regulatory matters, working in fast-paced environments, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
Skilled in providing commercially focused legal and regulatory support, with strong drafting, negotiation, project management, and communication abilities.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other standard office tools, with the ability to effectively communicate across all organizational levels.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, influence stakeholders, work both independently and collaboratively, and manage competing priorities.
Performance-driven, proactive, and developing leadership and management capabilities.
